I also start the year reading this book and having my students put a bunch of ideas into our idea jar for students to pull from throughout the year if they need help coming up with a writing topic. Ideas can be vague like a pirate or detailed like a purple hippo wearing a tutu who can't dance. This makes writers block feel more fun.

Choose Your Own Adventure Stories

Give students either a theme, character type, story element, etc. and they create their own stories based on what was given. Then, students can read them and see how everyone's was different with the same inspiration.

Writing Journals

Sometimes there is a short prompt, sometimes it's a free write, picture prompts, etc.

Emoji Writing

One of my favorite things to do is use a random selection of emojis to have kids write a story about them. The kids have a blast and they are willing to participate. Even my high school kids want to share their stories with their classmates.

Roll and Writes

Give students a mat with different characters, settings, problems, solutions, etc. Roll the dice for their story elements and then write! Plus - it can be made for any level!

Writing Detectives

We did a fun writing activity being writing detectives and trying to guess using context clues from each students story where they went on summer vacation. Fun beginning of the year writing activity.

As they enter a LL room, there is a fun question or silly topic or sentence starter, and I ask them to start writing (or type in Nearpod) to respond.
