And graphic novel is a perfect form that balances the narrative and visual aspect.

Symbolisations and metaphors are the main method I use when constructing graphic novels. Similar with storytelling, they create multiple layers between things, and different layers echo with each other. Death is also a theme I continue to focus on. It's the source of all human confusion and powerlessness, while it's also the reason that ' meaning' exist. People often associate death with concepts like darkness, abyss, etc. While the sun, as the absolute opposite of darkness, sometimes also becomes a symbol of death - overwhelming heat that burns everything; Or when the sun turns black, the contrast often creates more desperate feeling than the pure darkness does.

When I was in kindergarten, one day I finished my colouring book and handed it in to my teacher, with the sun coloured yellow. Then the teacher laughed at me, telling me that the color of the sun should be red rather than yellow.

I was confused and after school that day, I kept staring at the sun on the way home, trying to figure out the actual colour of the sun. Then I saw illusion—— grey fishes swimming around the rim of the sun.

I planned to build a narrative framework for my story out of this.

In The Poetic of Space,，Bachelard analysed human experience（memory and dreams) attached to different parts of a house. 

He offers a vertical image of the house which is created by the polarity of the attic and basement, denoting irrationality and rationality respectively. The attic not only shelters us from the weather but it also makes apparent the whole structure of the house. The attic, in Bachelard's The Poetics of Space, is a metaphor for clarity of mind. The basement, on the contrary, is the darker, subterranean and irrational entity of the house. Both this sites appear in our dreams and produce varying kinds of them.

I really love the idea of verticality of space, especially house. So I listed some important memory fragments of mine, as well as some dream fragments,  which I believe revealed something about the way I feel my being in the world, including my fear and eagerness.

Then I put these fragments into different floors of my fictitious house, from the cell to the attic, each floor becomes lighter, with more hope and flowing quality. The strange quality that makes people attracted and discomfort at the same time is quite obvious on this plant. Later I can't help thinking of what kind of size is this plant actually in. It's like a mystery.

So I wrote a script——a surrealism story, where the protagonist kept seeing this blur picture on her ceiling from her childhood, trying to figure out what's on the picture all the time. Through the process she grew taller, she could gradually see the object clearer bit by bit. Also, even though I liked the beginning of this story, the ending couldn't help but seem clichéd. At the same time, I also developed a certain degree of tiredness with the visual language I've been using. 

So, for this story, I only drew two spreads and abandoned. Still, it will exist as the resource of my future work. Through this way, while maintaining the general direction towards the initial setting, the narrative is given more freedom and possibilities, that's what makes it alive.

It's quite similar to the process I make animations. Sometimes it's like playing chain story game. The whole journey was exciting and characters go alive. So I'm going to continue exploring it through my visual narrative process, and use it as my starting point.

Looking closely at two existentialism narrative examples(The Myth of Sisyphus and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead), it is noticeable that both of the authors (Albert Camus and Tom Stoppard) started by capturing an element of absurdity in the source context (Hamlet and Greek Mythology), then they amplified this absurdity by constructing an existentialism narrative space around them. I plan to use this method as a reference, trying to find some chinks of absurdity in existing contexts as an embryo of my narrative.

In ancient Chinese myth Hou Yi Shot Down Nine Suns, Hou Yi saved human beings by shooting down the extra nine sun crows in the sky, only one left continued illuminating the world. Here I detected a chink of absurd: The ambiguity of the role of heroes and monsters.

So I decided to start with another version of this story —— After shooting down nine sun crows, the hero still chases after the last crow, then shoots it down. The world fell into darkness and she falls into the black hole burned out by the melting crows. In the process of falling, the hero sees the other side of the world: everything has its opposite sides which are mutually exclusive but interdependent at the same time, like a paradox. Eventually the hero will find out that she is also one of the crows.

Airbrush creates a tender atmosphere with subtle sense of light. I created some new visual effects while experimenting with overlapping different layers blending modes. They are really impressive!

The following two images are two pages of the short graphic novel 'Love Story' I drew during the summer. I used this combination of layer blending mode and brushes for the first time, to create a sense of memory and dream, showing a gentle but prickly quality.
