What is Memory for?

Memory is for storing instructions and files that are running. For example RAM (random access memory) stores current files and data that are running RAM is editable so it allows us to load up a document and edit it however RAM is wiped when the computer is turned off. A hardrive is used for storing data when it is not being used. Memory is also used for storing instructions for example the ROM this allows the system to run simple instructions that can be only edited by a expert. For example telling an embedded system like a dishwasher to wash or pressing the power button and the computer starts up windows.

For example you want to watch a video the file size is 2 GB but you only have 1GB of RAM, RAM Paging can help this means the comptuer can split the movie into 2GB 1 GB each when the first part of the movie is done with it will load the second part however this is slow as the computer has got to load the next page which will take a long time for the computer to load so RAM Paging is <del>slow.</del>

Virtual Memory is back up RAM for when needed virtual memory is slow because it uses storage from the hardrive as RAM for example you only have 1GB RAM and they are 2 files that are 1GB each it will take a long time to switch in between files. So you can use the the hardrives storage as RAM to store the other file this allows you to switch between files quicker. Virtual Memory is needed for storing things beyond your RAMS capacity and is needed for backup memory.
