Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a way to celebrate the lives of our ancestors.  We celebrate this day every year with many exciting activities. We make ofrendas, visit the cemetery, and have a big dinner at home to celebrate. 

Ofrendas

One of our biggest traditions involves making an ofrenda, which is similar to a special altar. We set it up in our living room and place pictures of our family members who have passed away on it. We also add their favorite foods, drinks, and things they liked. The ofrenda serves as a way to remember and honor our loved ones.

Visiting the Cemetery 

The highlight of our Día de los Muertos celebration is our visit to the cemetery. We bring flowers, especially marigolds (cempasúchil), which are bright orange. We clean up the graves of our family members and place fresh flowers on them. Then, we have a picnic right there! We eat pan de muerto, which is a sweet bread, and share stories about our loved ones. It is very peaceful and happy.

Celebration Dinner 

After the cemetery visit, we have a big family dinner at home. We enjoy lots of delicious Mexican food like tamales and mole. My favorite is the hot chocolate we drink. It's spicy and sweet at the same time! During dinner, we share more stories and sometimes even sing songs that our grandparents taught us.
