I developed an educational project in wich every parent come to kindergarten to talk about their jobs. They shared with children pictures, work instruments and little stories. They brought different materials made from plastics and played with kids as a teacher, nurse, police officer, biology researcher, management agent, selling agent etc. It was a great opportunity of involving parents in education, so they become more aware of the important role that they should play in their children's school life. Also children enjoyed these activities and learned more about jobs in general. They also felt proud of their parents and shared positve emotions with their colleagues.

In my professional experience I have worked with students from 3 till 15 years old. For older students we have had parents coming to school to share what their jobs consist of and answer all questions about them. This had to do with vocational choices and it was extremely important for children to be able to speak freely with their colleagues' parents. With the younger students I have had some experience with celebration activities like Father's Day or Mother's Day which work very well. Other experiences report to open lessons where parents come to class and accompany their children in the activity prepared. All of these have worked well and there has been positive feedback from all - parents, students and school board.

Our students had already visited two schools, in Greece and Poland, and they had been impressed by the decorations made by the foreign students. When the partners came to Italy, students and families decided to welcome in the best way the partners with fantastic decorations to celebrate all the countries involved in the project. A great experience: parents came to school and worked very hard with their children. Students and teachers from Greece, Spain and Poland appreciated a lot Italian creativity.

One of the most positives experiences I had of working with parents was a school activity called “Chá poético” (poetic tea). The students of the school I was working at that moment didn’t like poetry. So, we decided to ask the parents if they would like to do an activity where they could should to their children the pleasure of reading poetry. Therefore, at home they would prepare a poem with their kids to present in this “tea party”. If they would they could come to the Portuguese class and study poetry with the students supporting the teacher’s work. The day and time for the tea, was previously agreed with parents, so that they all could participate and be present. In the Wednesday afternoon, the parents that didn’t worked came and prepared a beautiful tea zone. All the students, parents, teachers, employees were excited and at the end it was a beautifully moment. And through that day long, kids started to enjoy poetry.

http://agcmpejao-m.ccems.pt/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=1386

Parents have create parents associations and organise every now and then proms or other balls for our students, bazaars to earn money for their excursions at the end of the year, or for raising money to provide the school with a IWB or laptops, etc or to print the yearbook... Every spring we organise together a two day meeting with our students, where they present their jobs and they opportunities they gained from school, universities, from studying abroad etc. Still I think we could involve them more, but we are always are afraid and we dont really know the limits of this collaboration...

The parents prepared foodstuffs, baskets horticulas and frutiferos, with the students; while in school, I and the students, we prepared the sales bank, the price list and the scheduling for the activity that counted on the presence and participation of parents, in addition to the teachers and students. The commitment of the students, parents and myself, allowed the objectives to be achieved and started with the planning of an interdisciplinary study visit, which took place at the end of the second period. This activity shows that we can reap positive results if we invite parents to get involved and participate, meeting their specificities and characteristics, as well as the environment in which they are inserted.

Collaborating with parents is the best way for us teachers to face daily challenges with students and school in general. I always try to get parents involved in the learning process of their kids, they can do so much to make every step of the way easier and fruitful. At the beginning of the school year I like to meet them to show them which are the goals set for their kids to achieve, I also invite them to come over to school to talk about their jobs especially because teaching in a professional school students can relate to such important issues seeing them in perspective when theywill be done with high school education and active in a working scenario. Some parents who work as culinary chefs in five stars restaurants have often given a vivid account of their daily efforts as top chefs preparing not just meals but real work of art. Students are always interested in such real life tales and establish themselves goals to achieve in their future life.

I have just once had a parent in the classroom who offered to help with the class behavior with a communication to students. It didn't solve the problem but it was a very interesting experience. I wish I could have some more.
I have two other positive experiences to report, but not in the classroom.
The first happened three years ago when I organized a camping activity with my students in the mountains. the parents were happy to organize themselves for lifts, visits to the camp site, food and kitchen equipment. They were really cooperative and were very thankful at the end of the activity.
Another happened with an Erasmus+ project, when parents were willing to host the foreign students for a week. They put all their effort into local tours, cooking traditional food and spoiling our guests with the best they had. These were quite special parents; the best any teacher could possibly have.
Apart from this, parents usually come to term meetings to get their children's assessment, or for weekly appointments once a term, but many ignore the need to communicate with the school, or simply lack the time or the resources.

It was a bit difficult so the teacher asked the parents available to help us.We were happily surprised to see that they wanted to come and not only helped us but we enjoyed their company. W e came closer to them and it was much easier to deal with school problems in their class. They come to school smiling and always ready to help .

However, he liked that the involvement of parents was beyond the monitoring of school results and student attendance. With this course, I intend to discover other ways for parents to actively participate in the education and the school project of the students. The best experience I had of parental involvement occurred a few years ago when parents, teachers and students got involved in organizing a traditional feast of Portugal - S. João - for the whole school community. The moment served to demonstrate that the school can break the day-to-day formality, break down prejudices and be a school open to the community.

Some Italian dialects are real languages, so we had a great job of sharing texts and translations and, without finding a music base, we thought we'd involve a daddy musician who accompanied us with the guitar. Initially, to tell the truth, we were all embarrassed by the dad, the pupils, and I but then, between one of the tantalizing and the other, we got confident and worked together with great effort. Seeing that parent arrive on stage at the show's day, it was a very beautiful and engaging moment that gave way to many direct and indirect intervention opportunities.

Regarding parents involvement in the school activities, there's a lot of mixed feelings (from both the parents and the school). Some parents are willing and eager to participate and contribute while others don't like to be involved (mostly due to their work schedules). I also see lots of mix feelings fro the teachers and coordinators - some are happy to have participation from the parents and are quite proficient at engaging them in a productive manner, while others fear that this involvement could jeopardize the rhythm/pace of their classroom. I found that when both parents and teachers are in sync, the parents engagement is a valuable thing and can benefit the classroom. Hence the effort that should be made, on a ongoing basis, on improving the parents/school/teacher communication.
