There were many orphans and widows/widowers in the town and they were at war with the local Native Americans. There are many accounts that suggest that during this time the "Afflicted children" had been experiencing traumatic episodes that they said were the affect of witchcraft. Scientists believe that the episodes had been a mixture of stress, asthma, guilt, boredom, child abuse, epilepsy, and delusional psychosis. The fits may also have been caused by convulsive ergotism which was caused by eating grain or bread infected by ergot. So they would have wanted to grab attention to themselves to better the probability of getting married. And accusing your neighbor as a witch sure would do just that. In an article it states " It was perhaps their original design to gratify a love of notoriety or of mischief by creating…excitement in their neighborhood… They soon, however, became intoxicated by the terrible success of their imposture, and were swept along by the frenzy they had occasioned"
