John and Jenny get bring home Marley

John and Jenny decided on a dog at one of the breeding farms in their state. The previous time they visited they met the puppy's mother and ran into the father at the end of the visit, he was wild with a lot of energy. They didn't think that their puppy would turn out the same so they put him in their car and brought him home.

John and Jenny try to have a baby.

On page 28 it says," As we grew more comfortable with the new members of the family, we became more comfortable talking about expanding our family in other ways,"(Grogan 28) They continue to try for a baby which leads to Jenny becoming pregnant but unfortunately the baby ended up not making it when they had their first doctors appointment.

Marley gets kicked out of obedience school.

John took Marley to an obedience school to try and fix his behavior. However, Marley was so badly behaved they kicked him out. He embarrassed the coach because she always said it was the people not the dog who created bad behavior. When she was unable to control Marley, she decided he's not ready for it and he needed to go.

Marley Ate a gold Necklace

John had bought Jenny a gold necklace for her birthday and she went to put it on but placed it down. They came to the conclusion the dog probably has it. They tried to sneakily get it from him but then Jenny noticed him chewing and said,"'He's eating it!' Jenny screamed."(Grogan 100) John spend a couple of days trying to find the precious gold necklace in... dog poop.

Jenny finally had her baby.

Jenny was pregnant again and this time it worked out. She had a baby boy who they named Patrick. They were afraid at first Marley would be aggressive towards the baby but he would show nothing but affection towards the new baby.

Marley the movie dog.

Marley was signed up to be in a movie! In the book it says," ...Jenny called me at the office to tell me Marley was getting a film audition." Marley went to the audition and they took him. On the first day of their filming they couldn't even get the seconds they needed out of him because he was just too crazy and had a hard time following directions. The director told John that they'll let him know and to his surprise, they did. Marley came back to film and they ended up really enjoying the film crew.

"In the Land of Bocahontas"

John, Jenny, Marley, and their children moved down to Boca Raton which is a city in Florida. John described it as," ... a land of luxury sedans, red sports cars, pink stucco mansions crammed onto postage-stamp lots, and balkanized walled developments with guards at the gates." So it was pretty much a rich "new money" town. He made up a character; Bocahontas since the Disney movie Pocahontas had just come out and he made his new character the city version of Pocahontas.

The pizza place Incident

Jenny and John wanted to take their sons and Marley on a little "night out" and go out to eat. They tried Marley to one of the legs of their chairs but unfortunately he saw something much more interesting. He basically pulled the chair across the plaza to get to a dog he was checking out. He knocked over tables and ran over little kids. The employees offered help but they decided they would rather just leave.

Jenny is pregnant... WITH A GIRL!

John and Jenny already had two boys and secretly, they were hoping for a girl. They had a ultrasound and the book says, " When a sonogram finally confirmed our secret hope, Jenny draped her arms over my shoulders and whispered,'i'm so happy I could give you a little girl.' I was so happy too" (Grogan 187) They decided to name her Colleen and a couple of months later she was born.

Dog Beach

John wanted to do something fun with Marley and take him to a beach in his area called " Dog Beach". It was an off leash beach but police tried to stop it. However, there were no police around so they took of the leashes anyways. The one rule of the beach (unspoken rule) was that your dog could not use the restroom in the water. Marley got a little excited after drinking too much salt water and threw up in the ocean. John was so embarrassed but no one had seen so he was okay. Later, Marley had been needed to go and John looked up at him going IN THE WATER. John tried to stop him as people watched in horror but he was too late. People came up to him complaining and he decided the best decision would be to leave. That was the last time Marley ever went to a beach.

John gets a new job and him and his family move to Pennsylvania.

John decided he wanted to look at another job and he went down to Pennsylvania for the interview and called Jenny to say," You're not going to believe this place," So, they packed up and moved there. In the airport John shoved some tranquilizer down his throat which made him a little high. Their kids also brought some frogs which they dropped on the airport floor and their plane.

"The Land of the Pencils"

John's children were very upset to find out that Pencils don't just hang from trees but more importantly, they should they'd have snow. John and Jenny may have over-exaggerated how much snow there would be which really upset them. They waited and waited for the snow to come which made John and Jenny feel bad and eventually in late January, the snow fell. It was the kids, and Marley's first time experiencing snow.

Adding a New Edition to the Family.

Since they now had 2 acres of land and they lived in the countryside, it only felt right for them to get another animal to fill the space. The book says," For any gardener who has sworn off chemical pesticides and fertilizers, chickens made a lot of sense." A New mom from the school their kids went to offered to give Jenny some chickens. The only downside was, they forgot to check the genders. There can only be one male since they fight over dominance but they were given three males and one female. It didn't go well as you can imagine so they traded back their roosters for some hens. Marley got along with them just by chasing them and playing with them.

Missing Marley

John went to take Marley out to the bathroom and left him on the porch to shovel some snow. When he returned Marley was nowhere to be found so he got Jenny and they searched. John started to worry because in the text it says," The more I hunter, the angrier I got. Where the hell did he mosey off to this time? But as the minutes passed my anger turned into worry." He also said," I thought of those old men you read about in the newspaper who wander away from nursing homes and are found frozen in the snow three days later." They had a hard time finding him so they went home to warm up and there Marley was, sitting on the porch.

"Beating the Odds"

John boarded Marley since him and his family went on a trip. He got a call from one of the vets saying there's something off with Marley. His stomach turned and they just got him better. The chances of it turning again was very high which was worrisome. She said that they can either wait it out or put him down. By some crazy chance, Marley's stomach didn't turn again and he was okay. For now.

The big fall

"Help! Marley fell down the stairs!"(Grogan 262) Marley had fallen trying to follow their son Conor. They thought he was okay but after a while he was having a hard time getting up. But from then on Marley struggled to go up those stairs.

Flipped Stomach

John was away from home and he got a call from Jenny saying she couldn't get him inside because he couldn't stand up. His stomach flipped again. They called the vet and he came in for an emergency visit.

RIP Marley

They told John Marley wouldn't survive surgery and if they fixed his stomach it would flip again. John called Jenny and they exchanged "I love yous" and John went to say goodbye. "You know all the stuff we've always said about you?... what a total pain you are? Don't believe it. Don't believe it for a minute Marley." He signed the release paper and brought Marley's body home.

"Beneath the Cherry Trees"

John woke up early to bury his beloved dog. He walked outside and buried him under a cherry trees outside of his house. His family came out and they put some flowers on his grave and wept as a family.

John wrote a column about Marley and woke up to tons of messages giving their condolences to him. " But this morning there were hundreds, far more than anything I had received before. The headers at the top of the e-mails said things like "Deepest condolences,""About your loss," or simply "Marley." They all connected over their lost pets and a lot of people talked about what a pain their animal was and how much they missed them. He learned Marley taught him through the phase of his life he was going through and that made Marley forever special to him.
