Students can conduct a research project where they use the scientific method, create an experiment, observe, collect data, and come to a conclusion. Through a project like this students create their own learning, answer their own questions, do their own research, come to their own conclusions, etc. The research project may be a unit project or an end of the year project that the students work on over time.

REFERENCE:https://www.bie.org/about/what_pbl

The teacher may pose the following problem to the class:

"Everymorning when you wake up your mom makes you breakfast. And everyday she makes the same exact thing:
- just add water bisquick pancakes
- pure maple syrup
- 3 slices of bacon
- a glass of orange juice
and every single day after breakfast you get an uncomfortable stomach ache. The doctor isn't much help but he says that you probably are slightly allergic to something you're eating for breakfast. What is your approach to this problem? How are you going to determine which breakfast food is causing the stomach ache?"

Students are then able to used problem-based learning skills to decide how they want to approach and solve this problem. The point of this problem-based learning activity may be to gain understanding about data collection. The teacher wants to know if the students can figure out how to use data collection ( controls ,etc.) to solve this problem.

REFERENCE: http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/197166/chapters/What_Is_Problem-Based_Learning¢.aspx

Teacher may ask student to write down questions about an assigned topic, such as the last Ice Age, or the teacher may students to write down questions about something they are interested in. For example, a student might want to know how the video game they play at home was made. The students will be given time to make a prediction of the answer to their question, and then research and investigate answers to their questions. Once the investigation is complete, the students will have to present what they have learned to the class and explain how they went about answering their question.
REFERENCE: https://www.edutopia.org/blog/what-heck-inquiry-based-learning-heather-wolpert-gawron

Constructivism is easily applied in Earth Science because it is essentially what science is all about. Students are posed questions, presented with problems, and given tasks that they must complete by using their own creative methods and techniques, they must find answers to inquiries and solve problems through their own observation, data collection, and exploration and learning. They also are able to share the process, and share their findings and conclusions.
