There were many ways that my parents impacted my upbringing because they are the people who raised me, the people who they surround themselves with and even with me and my brother will affect me because we are all a product of our environment. In ways, I feel like I'm super different from them. My dad is pretty old-fashioned and my mom is kinda like that. When it comes to gender issues, personally I don't think that they understand it and it's not their fault because they aren't exposed to other people with different views and the way they grew up was so much different from how we grew up. Personally, it honestly depends. Usually, my dad has a better sense and my mom sometimes just follows. But in all, I feel like I've learned more from being oppressed as well.

My mom has had a huge influence on how I had responded to stress. Both of my parents have influenced how I have responded to conflict. Growing up, both of my parents would often be at work but they both did their best to be present with my siblings and I in ways that they knew how to. As I've gotten older, I'm realizing that my dad has had a higher influence in terms of my musical interests and hobbies, whereas my mom has influenced how I view health, relationships, etc.

I've been thinking about this alot b/c of the handful of obituaries and eulogies i have read or have written. Growing up in an Ilokano American family, mostly the men were the stay at home parent, while most of the women were the bread winners. I actually co-wrote an article about Critical Pin@y Parenting with my wife Arlene . I can share with you all. What I learned from my parents was this perception of my mom would say that my dad was the leader of the family, by title, but in practice my brother and dad knew that she was the leader. I grew up knowing women were strong, but the patriarchy embedded in my family held on to the beliefs that men had the last word. That men had to always be tough, and women had to be sensitive, but in my mom's case she had to be strong and tough too. As a parent now and as person who believes in equity, I drew upon my father and uncles' fathering in terms of cooking, cleaning, but to go beyond and take on some of the emotional work that women take on such as the family counselor, providing love, and showing affection.

I grew up with my mother and grandmother for most of my life. I barely was raised by my father. both of them were born in the 70s, they were raised by both of their parents. Whom which were very "old-school parenting", which I think they passed downt those characteristics upon me. Some of the characteristics that my mother did was the pressure to be a "provider" and my father taught me masculinist notions, of "manhood". It impacted me growing up, but after i learned about the how the Marcos years. I was more understanding of how the culture, and ideology impacted how they raised me, as a means to "survive".

I feel like both my parents have influenced me and impacted my personal upbringing in my own ways. I was able to grasp certain things from each parent, both different things that helped me form to the person I am today. My mom influenced me with how I present and feel certain emotions, and with my dad I was able to learn how I deal with my education and work ethics.

My mom serves as both a bridge and a wall between God, my culture, and I. Although she introduced me to some of my core identities, she's counterintuitively hindered me from seeing them in their entirety. For example, she was the first person to show me what unconditional love is yet displays indirect hatred towards my flat nose, my inconsistent faith, or my struggles with mental health. I question how somebody I love and trust can lead me to not be able to love and trust who I am.
