Motifs usually show up in works of fiction, and they can either be the main idea or support the main idea. Motifs are recurring people, phrases, or objects that correlate with the idea of the book. This is only for essays though because authors may portray their ideas in many ways depending on the type of text that is being written. Another way that an author may portray their main idea but in novels is by subtly introducing their ideas throughout the beginning of their text through character conversations. They could make characters drop certain hints in order for the reader to understand their main idea and continue through the book.
