In King's response to an open letter criticizing his methods of protest, King begins with a calm and respectful tone as he explains his presence in Birmingham and the steps he takes in his non-violent protests. King details the letter with his reasons for non-violent protest as well as examples of other protests using methods similar to his. As King concludes his letter, his tone ascends to anger as he discusses the evils of segregation.
