The "Black Sox scandal", as it came to be known, was when the best players on the White Sox decided to start throwing games. Gamblers would then bet on the other team, and pay the players for their participation. The White Sox were the best team in the MLB at the time, so they were expected to win most games. Their odds started out 5-1 against the Cincinnati Reds, then dropped to 8-5, and 2 days before game one, the odds were even. A man named Arnold Rothstein put $270,000 on the Reds at the world series, and then they won.

This is a quote players joining the MLB used as baseball players made a lot of money. What people didn't know is that the White Sox, though one of the best teams, made the least amount of money. Eddie Collins negotiated his trade and got $14,500 annually, while Shoeless Joe was purchased for the same amount as Collins, and made $6,000 a year ($89,000). Ed Rush, a Cincinnati player, had a batting average 60 points below Jackson's made $10,000. Comiskey, owner of the Sox, even skipped out on meal allowances. He gave them $3 a day, while all other owners paid $4.
