Very intelligent researchers at Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI) have created an implantable sponge with the ability to monitor and control for hemorrhaging. The researchers developed the device to consist of three layers. The top and bottom layers are made of silver nanowires which provide antibacterial properties, and the middle spongy layer acts as a sensor that detects for bleeding (Hastings, 2023). The TIBI researchers state, "developing more advanced signal processing techniques and/or integrating other biosensors could enhance the device's specificity, accuracy, and practicability (Haghniaz et al., 2023)."

This small, but mighty device can definitely be life-saving! From working in an ER, I know that hemorrhaging is one of the fastest causes of death, especially in trauma patients. It can also be prevented when detected early. With this implantable sponge, medical professionals can act quickly to stop the bleed and reduce the risk of mortality (Haghniaz et al., 2023). I also believe that this device can lead to further medical advances and provide rapid detection of other preventable causes of death.
