Hey everyone I’m Justin, I’ve been teaching and coaching for 7 years now. I just finished up year three at Tivy HS in Kerrville teaching Algebra, and will be on the move to Canyon HS in New Braunfels this summer. My summer plans include spending as much time as possible with family wherever that takes me, and finishing my final semester of this masters program!!!

I choose to summarize the article “School Communities Rely on Calm and Thoughtful Leadership” By Adam Mihelbergel. A character trait that good leaders have in intense/stressful situations is a calm and thoughtful demeanor. Great leaders upfront and honest, as well as excellent communicators! Leaders don’t rush to conclusions, they listen to and value ideas from everyone involved. “we also have a responsibility, as district administrators, to be thoughtful and calm in times of crisis. Our communities are looking to us for guidance. I actually heard from a parent yesterday who said, “The calm way you handle this helps keep us calm.” It’s our responsibility to teach our kids how to be safe and take care of themselves. It’s also our responsibility to not cause panic in the process. We’re monitoring the situation closely, but when the kids are here during the school day, it has to be the calm, safe place that they’re used to.” (Mihelbergel 2021) Adam Mihelbergel is the principal and director of student services at Brannockburn School District 106 in Illinois, he answered the “call to duty” for his school and community during the pandemic.

The picture is selected represents helping hands, and good leaders are always there to help! Be the leader that helps bring out the best in others. I call this type the “come with me leaders”, they show the way and aren’t afraid to ask for help themselves! This picture is a two-way street, help may be coming from one side now, but there’s always two prospectives.

Resources:
Mihelbergel, Adam. “School Communities Rely on Calm and Thoughtful Leadership.” ASCD Inservice, ASCD, 3 Feb. 2021, inservice.ascd.org/school-communities-rely-on-calm-and-thoughtful-leadership/.

Sinek, Simon. “HOW TO BE A LEADER .” YouTube, REDDOTX, 13 July 2018, m.youtube.com/watch?v=urrYhnaKvy4.

Willink, Jocko. “What Makes A Good Leader vs Bad Leader - Jocko Willink & Brian Stann.” YouTube, Jocko Podcast, 30 Dec. 2019, m.youtube.com/watch?v=cxwazgkMh58.
