I chose this passage because it shows a slight amount of hesitation in Alfons’ choice on whether he would throw a rock and damage the property. This stood out because up until this point Alfons was completely under Hitler and the Nazi’s command, but here, he hesitates and actually thinks what he was doing. #hesitation

I chose this excerpt because it shows how quick Alfons was able to decide where he wanted to be and what he wanted to do with his life. I was shocked that he had, within 3 weeks decided something he was passionate for flying. #dedication

This excerpt shocked me, and it seemed to somewhat shock Helen based on her wording. It was just surprising to see the dreadful situation of the children in the ghettos and how much children at such a young age had to experience such a horror. #shocked

I chose this excerpt because it represents the violence in a camp where the guards were not the main enemies, the prisoners were violent towards each other. This surprised me for two reasons, one was how the prisoners were violent to each other, and how the guards seemed to not care too much. #violence

Page 161. This excerpt was just a disappointing part of Alfons’ life, he thought his life was over and he lost everything. Alfons was revealed to be a hitler youth leader and he was almost certain he would be killed or arrested. This was powerful because it showed how everything Alfons bad was collapsing. #endoftheworld

Top of page 101.
This excerpt somewhat surprised me because it shows just how uneasy people were about hiding Jews because of the risk of facing punishment for it. It shows how Jews were asked to leave households so quick because their hosts would be in such a horrible situation if they were caught hiding a Jew. #nervous

168-169. This quote surprised me because the military liberated the camp but still couldn’t provide the needs of the prisoners. They were not able to provide the food for the prisoners and the prisoners were still dying even after the liberation of the camp, which is not something that gets mentioned as much in other sources. #hunger

Page 67. This shows as the war spreads due to Pearl Harbor and gave Germany a new opponent. This put new restrictions into place for the Jews in Holland. This made life in Holland for Helen way worse. It surprised me just how strict some of the restrictions were. #strict

Page 124. This was impactful because it shows Helen recognizing somebody else from Amsterdam, who happened to be Anne Frank with her mother and sister. It was just to show that they had met and were taken around time same time. I may have found it to be impactful because I had visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam on vacation and it was just a connection that I made. #connection

Page 182. This section shows how Alfons was sentenced to death. It showed the terror that all of the other men also felt as they were about to die. Alfons also didn’t seem to understand what he had done to deserve death. This shocked me because I did not think they were actually going to sentence a minor to death. Later on though, we learn it was just a hoax. #psych
