The instructional plan should be designed and individualized to the needs of a specific child. It is important to list and describe the individual’s learning strengths and relevant behavior challenges that should be considered. The individual student's likes and dislikes should be factored into the development and implementation of the plan. Having the student's input can lead to being supportive with self-discipline and goals.

"Generalization-Indicates how generalization will be addressed within the instructional phase and assessed following instruction, which could include any number of generalization strategies, such as introducing natural contingencies (cues and consequences) found within the natural environment. This strategy is usually an effective approach for promoting generalization, in that it seeks to use contextual variables specific to the environments where we hope the behavior will occur. These variables could consist of the typical daily schedule found within the classroom and building in cues and consequences designed to prompt and maintain the replacement behavior."(Wheeler, 2004. Pg. 232).

"There are 2 primary types of generalization: stimulus generalization and response generalization. Stimulus generalization refers to the learner’s capacity to respond to similar stimuli even if they are not identical to the ones used during teaching. For instance, if a learner is taught to identify a red apple, they should also be able to recognize a red ball or a red car as belonging to the same category."(Johnson, 2007).
