Civil Rights Act of 1866 - Ballotpedia 


Was the first federal law to define citizenship to make it illegal to deny citizenship based on race and/or color. Thus, bill was the first-time congress legislated over civil rights. The bill was vetoed by President Andrew Johnson, but Senate voted 33-15 to override the veto. Jackson believed the bill gave African Americans power over whites. The bill was a huge movement toward the equality of people of all descents. It granted the ability to sue others and to own property.  While the bill did not grant access to voting rights, or hold public office, it led to the 15th amendment, ratified in February of 1870, granting the right to vote regardless of color. Andrew Johnson was the first president with a total of 29 vetoes and 15 of the 29 were overridden by congress. Compromise of 1877 - Definition, Results & Significance - HISTORY  

Disputed the 1876 election, congressmen agreed that the republican president Rutherford Hayes would become the next US president, but the south would remain in the power of the democrats. The bargain allows the south to be rid of US troops but allowed Hayes into office. The south agreed to “comply” with the freedoms of African Americans. Later enacting the Jim Crow laws. The bargain not only displays the ties between federal and state governments. The election caused bloodshed in the south, between both parties.

The Dawes Act allowed the federal government to break up tribal land and assign it accordingly. Native Americans were required to enroll in an agency to see if they were allotted any land, if they were given land, it was not ideal for farming. Given the Native Americans were mostly gatherers and did not know how to run a farm many sold their land. They were underpaid for their land and did not understand the value of money and spent it fast. The goal of the Dawes Act was to integrate Native Americans into the Engish way of living. Thus, lead to less diversity and caused a disadvantage to Native Americans.

Was a law signed to help create a government transportation system. During the Civil War, railroads were private and caused a lack of supplies to troops. The agency was designed to create a regulation of the railroads. The regulation would decrease discrimination, and the rates of transportation. The Interstate Commerce Commission also regulated bus lines and telephones. Statistically union workers get more holidays off, have higher, and job security. The union provided support in everyway possible for their members. The creation of the American Federation of Labor helped create job security to later create an economic boom in the manufacture world, such as Fordism.

After the Treaty of Paris was signed, it allowed the United States to buy the Philippine Islands. While the United States wanted to colonize the land, the Philippines had just fought independence from Spain and were not willing to give control over to another leader across the ocean, leading to the Philippine War. The Pure Food and Drug Act | US House of Representatives: History, Art & Archives 

After the publication of The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair exposing the disgusting conditions in which workers in the food industry worked, the government took notice after the book sold numerous copies. Legislation that would prevent “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated or misbranded or poisonous or deleterious foods, drugs or medicines, and liquors.” The Pure food and Drug Act was passed in the House of Representatives by a 240-17 vote. This Act would stop the sale of mislabeled products. Thus, products would have to disclose the ingredients within, such as the harmful red dye used in many food products. Fordism was the start of the manufacturing world; Ford was the creator of the assembly line. The creation of the assembly line created an economic boom because it made manufacturing faster and more efficient. In return mass production and mass consumer buying caused rising wages, thus rising wages caused thousands to invest in stock. Rising stock will ultimately help create the big problem of the stock market crash in1929. On October 29th, 1929, the panic of the decreasing value of stock caused 16.4 million shares to be traded in one day, causing billions of dollars to be lost, giving the day the name of Black Tuesday. When Did Women Get the Right to Vote in the US? - WorldAtlas

The right for women to vote movement lasted decades until women were finally granted the right to vote in 1920 by the 19th amendment. Womens suffrage started well before the 20th century and was worldwide. Women were not to own property, had no lawful cause to possess money, or had the right to vote. Women were to focus on housework and raising children, rather than political values, which was a “man's” job at the time. As the movement progressed more women became college educated and part of the working class. Because of the lack of med during the first world war women had to step up. World War I stared with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. Then Austria-Hungary blamed Siberia, when Austria declared war on Siberia, Russia jumped in to side with Siberia. The War was based upon trench warfare, where large 6–8-foot trenches were built to help protect against enemy fire. The United States did not enter War until 1917 and led the war to an end in 1918. The Allies consisted of Great Britan, France and Russia. Whereas the central powers included Germany, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Italy. During the war the United States was the biggest producer, so unemployment decreased, and the economy boomed.

The second World War was between virtually every country in the world. Axis powers included Germany, Italy and Japan. The allies included France, Great Britan, the United States, the Soviet Union and little so China. The 40,000,000–50,000,000 deaths incurred in World War II make it the bloodiest conflict, as well as the largest war, in history. The war stated with Germany invading Poland, which triggered France and Great Britan, Poland’s allies to attack Germany. The Soviet Union was only on Poland’s side because it didn’t want Germany to end with all of Poland’s land. NASA - The First Person on the Moon

Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, who took off from Kennedy Space center in Florida. The adventure to the moon was a race between the United States and the USSR. While the USSR had the first woman in space and the first spacewalk, we best them to the moon. Neil Armstrong and his crew spent three hours doing experiments and collecting rocks and dirt. Something that helped the United States with beating the USSR, was the funding for the program, sending men into space is not cheap. This was huge for the United States because a man went into space and walked somewhere other than on Earth.

The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln (ushistory.org)

April 11th, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford’s theater, in Washington DC. Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated, sending the country through shock. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, who believed in slavery and white supremacy and was infuriated about Lincoln’s thoughts upon the matters. Thus, event caused the United States to up security in the event of the president leaving the white house. Two weeks after the assassination John Wilkes Booth was fatally shot and killed. The assassination will later lead others to believe that one can accomplish such a horrendous goal. Leading to the assassination of James Garfield (1881), William McKinley (1901), and John F. Kennedy (1963). Lincolns body was returned to his hometown of Springfield Illinois, by train. The Great Depression was the worst economic downfall in the history of the United States. The Stock market crash caused people to pull money out of banks, which banks don’t hold the same amount of cash as the total amount of money all members have. Dust Bowl: Cause & Impact On Great Depression - HISTORY

The Dust Bowl was the loss of agricultural lands due to drought, states effected were, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota and parts of Montana and Wyoming. Dust drifts covered buildings and roadways and caused no visibility. The Dust Storms caused death to people and livestock; crops failed to grow without proper water supply causing a food shortage across the country. The Dust Bowl made the depression worse, making food scare. By 1934, an estimated 35 million acres of formerly cultivated land had been rendered useless for farming.
