         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Missouri Compromise was when congress agreed in 1820, that Missouri would be a slave state and Maine would be free.          <description><![CDATA[<div>As the Second Great Awakening took place religious leaders said that God blessed those who did the Lords work which in this case was abolition. Congress overlooked anti-slavery petitions, which was thought of as "The Gag Rule" because tried to silence abolitionists and debates.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Fugitive slaves were slaves that ran from the South in hopes of freedom with the help of some sympathetic Northern citizens.          <description><![CDATA[<div>President James Polk of 1846 drafted a bill in order to get money for the Mexican-American war. Before the bill went to congress, David Wilmot made an amendment called the Wilmot Proviso that stated slavery nor involuntary servitude will be present in the new territory. The South proposed extending the Missouri Compromise but the North turned that idea down.          <title>10. The Compromise of 1850</title>

         <title>9. The Fugitive Slave Act </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Although the Fugitive Slave Act seemed beneficial to the South, in reality neither side was satisfied. The South didn't fell that the act ensured the return of slave and the North felt that all enslaved people should be free. When the act was in place people who helped a slave escape or even people who wouldn't help slave catchers, would be imprisoned. The act was not very successful though because out of 10,000s only 299 fugitives were caught.<br>Source: history.com</div>]]></description>

There quickly became two governments competing which became very violent.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Senator Charles Sumner was shocked after violence broke out so he wrote a speech that soon got distributed throughout the country. His speech did create problems with Southerners though, Preston Brookes (South Carolina representative) attacked Sumner with a cane until unconscious two days after. One case was about Dred Scott a slave that moved to Wisconsin (a free state) with his owner but went back to Missouri to fight for his freedom. When Lincoln confirmed that there was not going to be a compromise they decided to "dissolve" the union and soon after, 6 other states left.
