Students receive a Writer’s Notebook at the beginning of each quarter. Students work on their Writer’s notebook for 15-20 minutes every morning after breakfast. Students are encouraged to draw and to write in their preferred language. Students decide how little or how much they want to write. The focus of each day varies as students learn new skills. The structure for this quarter is as follows:

On Mondays, students practice their spelling words according to their independent reading level. Students receive 10 spelling words and they decide how to practice their words (i.e. writing the word 3 times, rainbow writing, making a stair with the word, etc.).

On Tuesdays, students use a picture prompt to write a story that goes with the picture.

On Wednesdays, students write/draw about a topic of their choice or they can respond to the prompts posted on the smartboard.

On Thursdays, students practice their handwriting. Students write fun facts as they practice language conventions as well.

On Fridays, students write/draw about a topic of their choice or they can respond to prompts.

The final project for Unit 1 was for students to create an original story that could be part of the Magic Tree House series. Students decided to present their story in a variety of ways. They created a google slide presentation, made a video, wrote a book, and created a google Doc. The different modalities allowed for all students with different strengths to create their book and share it with class.

In my classroom I use a variety of math apps and online tools that are designed to reinforce foundational understanding by allowing students to practice arithmetic and other math standards. ST Math, for example, provided by the district, is an app that encourages students to think through a math problem without the use of language. The other apps are game-like fluency practice that students love and get to choose from during math centers.

A choice board gives students the ability to make decisions about their learning. Choice boards increase student ownership; students pace themselves and get to decide how to engage with information, along with how to demonstrate their learning. I usually provide choice boards to students during snow days.
