I really enjoyed his book. Ratliff is a phenomenal writer, and very good at transporting you into the music with his words. I enjoyed the diverse music that he chose for his playlists. I agreed with most of his elements, and he is quite good at describing them as well. Altogether, I liked his book and I enjoyed doing assignments based on it.

Favorite Elements

My favorite elements were The Single Note and Repetition. The single note in music examples is so piercing, sometimes annoying, but mostly just brings your interest to it. I understood that element the most, and liked how he described it to be a form of resistance, rebelling against conventions of making music a pleasurable experience all the time for the listener. And I also enjoyed repetition mostly for the musical examples that I was reminded I love so much. Repetition to some may scream unoriginality, but to me it says "This is what I want you to remember. This is what is important, and I want to get it through your head."

I had trouble with some elements, like Endless Inventory. It was hard for me to get a physical grasp on that element. Sometimes I can't connect his examples to what he is trying to say, because the element is so abstract.

I used to be convinced that professional music opinions was only for professional listeners and musicians, and I had no part in that world. If I couldn't use fancy words to describe why I like a song, then I didn't understand its true meaning. I now understand that everyone is a professional listener, and we are always subtly judging every music piece we come across. I analyze all of the music I like a lot closer, and can also now accept that the songs that others find annoying can still be valid and a good music taste, because it is mine and its what I like to listen to. My music taste is valid, and interesting, and just as complex as the next person's.

"A perfect moment is often wordless, or indirect if it has words." (205)

The perfect moment in a song, or a book, or a day can't be explained in tangible feelings. But when it hits you- you take in a breath a little bit deeper and smile and realize the implications of the perfect- that it has to end. But those moments are the ones to live for. Music brings us closer to perfection, and the deeper we listen the more transcendent we become.
