Creative Inquiry Pre-module Task 22T1 by Toby Wren

Calling all creative inquirers! What is the purpose of art? Many who have asked such a question would say that art is a record of our thinking; evidence of the questions that occupy the human psyche. The creative mind is necessarily a curious one and for centuries, artists have dared to contemplate some of life's biggest questions.

Below you will find 4 columns featuring 4 big questions. These questions have inspired countless novels, poems, sonatas, pop songs, paintings, films, comics and all manner of creative human responses. Why? Because they cut to the core of what it means to love, to exist, to be human.

Your task is to find an example piece of creative media that contemplates one or more of the questions below. Share your examples on this Padlet along with your interpretation or thoughts about the media you share. You can simply drag-and-drop onto Padlet (no need for an account), but please tag your post with your name.

This is a question that may not be answered but surely may be addressed. Maybe I am a conduit; a vessel of ideas, informed by perceived experiences. I could be a product of an intelligence that comprehends there are parts of me that are too intelligent to comprehend and I would be ok with that.

Simply, nothing is real but the present, when all else is imagination. Time has no duration, only depth. we reference an abstraction of depth as a linear series of conscious renders. By the time you read this it is already imagined.

I hope not as it is probably an ultimate achievement to find a balance that homeostasis tries to achieve whilst being totally dependant. Death could well be a welcome paradox; I think we should be prepared to try it at least once.

"I'm Not There" is a 2007 musical drama where six actors perform the role of Bob Dylan at various stages of the musician's life. I feel this film is an exploration of 'who' Dylan was, rather than 'what', which often times is the focus of music bio pics (see: Queen, et al). It examines the idea that humans are vessels for a time, place, movement, or idea, and that defining or categorising the 'who' into a 'what' is a product of our culture industry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFUEofAr9GA

I first passed off this documentary as metaphysical rubbish but a deeper meditation reveals it discusses topics we, humans, are only scratching the surface of. The doco is a deep dive into quantum physics and the force that binds the universe together and gives birth to everything. The essence I drew from it is that all life--matter and energy--is manifest vibrations of a higher-level energy that our senses perceive in a defined way. We feel heat. We see, or don't see, light. We feel a texture through touch (also, touching anything is impossible, WOT?). Ergo, our perception tells us we sense something, but this does not necessarily equate with anything real. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcKWx-wJv3s

Reinforcement of heteronormative narratives aside, Amélie is the perfect love story to me. The essence of this film is that love is both acceptance and surrender. Acceptance of self, or flaws, failures, and strengths; and surrender to the fear of being vulnerable to allow another person close enough to love you and love them in return. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkLkim0HYME

Jean Cocteau's interpretation of the Greek myth, this film dwells on the nature of being after death and of walking between worlds, in this case, to hell. There are opinions the work is biographical in parts, and that it was a way for the auteur to process recent history at the hands of the Nazis. While dated, it feels more experimental and avant grade than any contemporary production dealing with the same themes. For the characters, it seems that 'accountability' is what awaits in the afterlife. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ciOWebRF3Y

The 1999 film Boys Don's cry explores the journey of character Brandon Teena as a hermaphrodite who had been mis gendered by being assigned female at birth. The dominant thinking of compulsory binary assignment automatically others Brandon. His autonomy stripped from him at birth and his identity decided for him. I wonder if outside of the binary construct Brandon would have been male or given more freedom could have discovered his very own expression of gender.
