They were tired of being ruled by Great Britain, and especially when Great Britain imposed taxes on the colonies. That is referred to as „taxation without representation.“ On July 4, 1777, a celebration started spontaneously in Philadelphia (where the Declaration had been signed), with fireworks, bonfires, a band and boats in the river firing off guns.
