Why do you read and write stories? Write about a paragraph.

Humans read stories to educate themselves, and also escape everyday life. People read non-fiction to learn about the past, present, or any of their interests. People read fiction because it's all about imagination and fantasy. Humans write stories to teach others a lesson, educate others, or just to help people relax and be happy. I read stories when I'm stressed and need to escape into a different world. My brain is able to relax, and I'm just happier when I'm laying in bed and reading. I don't write stories very often, but when I do, I just want people to smile and enjoy it.

Readers, Writers, and Texts

How does the structure or style of a literary text affect meaning? Consider how Morrison's stream-of-consciousness, shifting points of view, and use of analepsis and prolepsis impact the meaning of the novel. Morrison's writing structure and style impacts the meaning of the novel because she is keeping the reader engaged all the times. As a reader, you have to be paying attention to who's talking, what time the chapter is from, etc. This is important since Morrison's meaning has to be thought about and discovered, it's not always obvious.

Time and Space

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved. The evils of slavery is mainly what Beloved is about, so it's important to know how the lives of African-Americans were effected by the Fugitive Slave Act and other laws. Morrison is able to write with so much detail and emotion because of the historical context.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)? The novel addresses issues of gender roles through Paul D, a specific example. Also, Morrison writes beautifully about the power one's past has over the present. The structure and style of Morrison's writing allows the readers to sympathize and maybe even empathize with "women of 124".

How does Auschwitz connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
Auschwitz and After connects to other works such as Beloved because Delbo and Sethe both endured many hardships and trauma. There are also times in each work that the author is writing in a stream of consciousness, direct thoughts. Also, Auschwitz and After is a memoir, similar to The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, both recalled memories from their pas, the good and the bad. Then, Delbo and Hughes both write about being a Jewish woman during WW2, and being an African-American man during Jim Crow, WW2, and slavery.
How does Auschwitz connect to our world today?
Auschwitz connects to our world today because of the long-lasting effects of WW2 and the Holocaust. There are still survivors that carry the trauma of the horrors that they endured at Auschwitz. When students learn about the Holocaust in history class, they don't really learn about how the prisoners felt, how much they suffered, and with this memoir, we get a first-hand account of the horrors.
