Some other similar “ice breaker” games that could be effective within the classroom can be found on a blog found on: https://saravanderwerf.com/2015/12/07/100-numbers-to-get-students-talking/

There are multiple clever games listed such as “100 Mathematical Equations” task which is very similar to the task we just attempted. It is a very similar idea, but instead of just numbers, it incorporates equations.

For upper grade levels, there are ice breaker challenges that incorporate fun topics such as In-N-Out’s 100x100 challenge! There is also another challenge incorporating ratios involving soda as well. These kind of math problems bring students together, to make problem solving much more enjoyable and interactive.

Drawbacks of 100 Numbers

Since it is a time sensitive game, lower students may feel pressured by their peers. Students may become anxious that they are not as quick as their friends; they may feel nervous that they are letting them down.

Adequate grouping: if this is used as an icebreaker at the beginning of the year, the teacher may not know the students well enough to pair them well. Groups filled with high students have a better chance of getting further than those groups with primarily low students.

Students can take charge of the board and be too helpful. Students may step in and point out numbers to other students and end up taking over their turn all together.

Although it could be a nice way to incorporate technology by having the students do this on an iPad or computer, the technology can slow students down. This is due to the highlighting process not being as instantaneous as doing this activity on paper.
