Now in 2021 Russia invaded Ukraine to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and to stop NATO expansion in Europe. "In mid-December 2021, Russia’s foreign ministry called on the United States and NATO to cease military activity in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, commit to no further NATO expansion toward Russia, and prevent Ukraine from joining NATO in the future. This can put civilians in the United States in danger.

On September 8, 2022, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledged continued support for Ukraine during a trip to Kyiv.
