Hey! Thank you so much for your interest in knowing how this year's pandemic changed my personality. I am happy to share with you my story, my experiences as we continue to combat this unprecedented challenges brought about by COVID-19. I hope you will be inspired and make this an inspiration to do so as well. As what our National Hero Dr.Jose Rizal said in one of his immortalized line,"Ang Kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan." (The Youth is the Hope of the Nation). #ParaSaDiyos, Lagi't Lagi para sa Bayan!

Before the pandemic happened, I was a running candidate for Supreme Student Government (SSG) for the position of Public Information Officer (PIO) for S.Y. 2020-2021 in my previous school in Junior High (Sta. Ana National High School).. I was a little bit nervous that time because I am afraid to lost the election and even my classmates are very supportive with my candidacy, they campaigned for me even in a short days for campaigning. However, because of my STRONG FAITH, I NEVER LOSE HOPE that one day I can serve the studentry despite the obstacles. And Yes, God didn't leave me on this battle. I won the election with a vote of half of the school's population. This made possible because of my dedication and as I am passionate in serving others.

AND THE PANDEMIC HAPPENED...

It has been (2) years now that we've experienced this disruptive pandemic. It realistically affects the whole nation and the world. This is indeed not a joke. This pandemic really affects our economy, education, business sector and its continuous rising numbers of unemployed people. To be honest, we are not physically, emotionally, financially ready for this thing to happen. I am not ready to be away with my friends, not seeing them face to face,bond with them, everything turned into darkness and didn't know how to bring back the light from within.

As I reflect on this, is pandemic still helped me to achieve my goals in life? or it just adds burden with my physical, spiritual and emotional health?

CATHOLIC CHURCH INVOLVEMENT DESPITE THE PANDEMIC

Back then when I was 10 years old, I am already involved in serving the Catholic Church in our community. It was my Godmother who encourages to attend church activities every Saturdays and attend Holy Masses every Sundays. Our Mom and Dad was very supportive with it. As I turned 12 years old, I served as a Choir member in our chapel singing Cebuano songs related to Holy Masses and Kasaulogan sa Pulong. Until I turned in the age of 13 years old, there was this one Godmother of mine too spoke to me very slowly and asked me to replace her as a Secretary II (under Social Communications Ministry) and imagine, a 13 year old kid whose offered to replace her to the post she has. I asked her, "Why naman, Ninang?". She replied in Cebuano, "Naa kay potential, Jus. Don't worry inaanak, I will still guide you gihapon." Suddenly, I accepted the appointment and go through several meetings with proper creation of the minutes, attended seminars on how to be a responsible social media user, how to write/compose an article and many more.. As years past by, I continued serving the Church for almost 4 years now and running.. God is indeed generous, there is much opportunities opened. In 2018, I was invited to do a Radio Station tour in one of the Catholic Radio Stations here in Davao (DXGN 89.9 Spirit FM) together with our Head whom I also called as my Sister (Ma'am Elena). After that she told me that, "Jus, do you want to be a Co-anchor sa isang segment ng GN?" (referring to DXGN). Because of my eagerness to experience, I accepted the invitation! In the same year, I was also awarded as Best News Year of Asia's long running Newspaper, Davao Catholic Herald.

Despite these challenges, we continue to serve the Lord. As they say, "COVID ka lang, Servants of God kami!"

I celebrated my birthday under a pandemic (April 2nd),no celebration with friends,classmates but only with my loved ones. One thing that I wished for my birthday is hopefully there's a big opportunity for me in that year, just to make it a productive one. God never disappoints me, he always find ways, answers my pleas. In May 2020, I joined a virtual event called Online Filipino Youth Action Summit (OSYAF), a 3-day online event which gathers Filipino Youths across the country, learning new knowledge and aims to help youth in composing a proposal to help their community,as well as promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),and be part of the nation-building. They partnered with JCI Philippines, P4SSitON and Youth Advocates for the Philippines (YAP).

On the same month after attending the 3-day Online Summit, one of my colleagues asked me if I can be the organizer for an activity for Kids so that they can help people especially during this trying times. Without hesitation, I accepted the challenge wholeheartedly because Kids are really close to heart of mine, they're part of my journey and I get motivation from them.

INVITED TO A SONA 2020

State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2020 of 16th President Rodrigo Roa Duterte? Yes! You read it right! I was invited to attend the SONA of Pres. Duterte last year! How it happened? I would also ask that for myself on how lucky I am to attend and be part of his SONA virtually. I informed my parents and loved ones the moment I received an email from Presidential Communications Office (PCOO) headed by Secretary Martin Andanar and Public Information Agency (PIA) headed by USec. Mon Cualoping. No one knows about it except my family. It was aired via National Television and Media News pages too. It was an honor and previlege to be with high ranking government officials such as Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto in a Zoom conference! Many of my friends noticed myself on the television, posted a photo on facebook asking if I was the one they caught on TV. I made it to the National Level!

Youth as a Catalyst: Young Generation to Lead the Nation into New Normal Situation

The knowledge that I acquired from the 3-day summit was very useful. It really equips us Youth Leaders and Advocates to be part of the change, to be a catalyst of change for our community and country. With that being said, why I wouldn't use this opportunity to give knowledge to my fellow Youths on how they can also act, collaborate, amplify their voices for its respective communities? That is why I organized an online webinar in partnership with JCI-Carmona Sorteo in Cavite! I was able to invite Mr. McGally Dimaano, Founder and President of Tulong Kabataan Foundation, Regional Vice President of JCI-Carmona Sorteo. Digital Certificates are provided upon answering the evaluation form. As we made it exclusively for only 80 Young Leaders all around the country, the target number was exceeded to 90+ registrants. It was done via Zoom. I am forever grateful to my team for being part of this journey. Our hardwork pays off! Always for the Motherland!

Kabataan sa Kartilya ng Katipunan (KKK)'s Leadership Formation (ADHIKAYAT Webinar Series and Walang Maii-JUAN Kakayanin ang Laban: An Online Beneficiary Concert- November 2020)

One of my colleagues in the Leadership Formation, Kuya Gelo, asked me if I can be the replacement as Webinar Program Head since the Head before me can't hold the responsibility. I agreed with it and started my duties as the Program Head, I am tasked to prepare the Project Proposal on the said program, look for Media Partners, Youth Organizations to partner with us on the event. I also give the credit to my hardworking Secretariat, from time to time he updates me with the progress, email reply from other organizations, a video message request to Vice President Robredo, submit necessary documents with When In Manila (wheninmanila.com) for us to partner with them, creation of Registration and Evaluation forms, virtual meetings for the publicity materials, captions, updates from different committees and many many more. Being the Program Head is not that easy, it requires patience,strong leadership and good communication skills both oral and written most specially accountability & responsibility to do things that is needed to complete as soonest as possible time. Thankfully, the event was successful! ADHIKAYAT Webinar Series is composed of (3) topics: ADHIKAIN, HIKAYAT, KAYA! We are very lucky to have once again Mr. McGally DImaano, together with Mr. Bryan Dave Perez, a Youth Leader, a Voice Artist under Mr. Pocholo Gonzales, and Ms. Celeste Cananua, Ten Oustanding Boy Scout of the Philippines. The event was attended by over 200+ participants online.

Who would have thought that I made it to the International Level! It's a very long story to tell but I will share with you the process.

International Global Network (IGN) opens an Application for a 3-day Fully-funded International Youth Leadership Summit (IYLS) 2021 (Virtually) that accept ONLY 360 delegates all around the world!

[International Youth Leadership Summit (IYLS) 2021 is designed for young brilliant minds who’d like to shape themselves as part of a better world in the future. Aiming to provide a learning platform for young people in the world to define their true potential and motivate them to start making a change, IYLS 2021 expects to reach out to hundreds of participants.

By participating in IYLS, youths will gain not only knowledge about youth and their superpower, but also getting to know how to be a great leader and leaders in 4 impactful topics. This year, we’re bringing a virtual version of IYLS which allows the youth to upgrade theirself from their comfy couch at home.]

I really prayed for it because it would be a life-changing event, a once in a lifetime experience. I asked for it, waited for the moment that an email will contain saying I got accepted from the application.. It would be a tough deliberation for the selection committee because there's lot of deserving applicants but only 360 delegates will proceed on the event. I am very nervous for the result but whatever the result is, I will solely accept it.

I GOT ACCEPTED!
After receiving an email from them, my initial reaction was questioning if is this really true because there's much better than me, lots of inputs on their CVs, good at their essays but I was one of the lucky leaders to attend the International Summit! I just can't believe it! I just waited for the right moment that soon I can be part of the summit. My parents are very happy with the result, they're part of praying for my application!
