         <description><![CDATA[<div>Although China was a very populated country it wasn’t particularly powerful and didn’t have much industry.&nbsp; Mao's response was the Great Leap Forward.&nbsp; During this time, Mao’s government forced its citizens into communes and all property was collectivized; everything from private property all the way down to the pots and pans of individual families was seized and sacrificed to “the cause.”<br><br>Responding to Mao’s vision, China focused only on the industrialization of both iron and grain.&nbsp; Because of his disdain for intellectuals, however, he refused to collaborate with the professionals from either field.&nbsp; As you can imagine, the plan was not successful.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

He began inciting the youth of China to take back the power from the "corrupt leaders."  He spread propaganda encouraging his followers to take out the "bourgeois" elements along with anti-communist elements which we believed had infiltrated the Chinese Communist Party.  </div>]]></description>

He claimed to have swam 9 miles in a little over an hour.  Although ridiculous, it captured the attention of the country, particularly the youth. </div>]]></description>
