The last trip I made outside of the United States before the pandemic was to Japan. There I visited Arashiyama's bamboo forrest, here is a photo I took of those huge bamboos, some over 90 feet tall. Coincidentally, during the pandemic, I ordered a lot of Asian takeout, with each order, two pairs of chopsticks made of bamboo came. I collected them. From that memory, my installation for this module was born.

For my creative process, I really wanted to do something with nature. Particularly something to sort of blend in with the background so to speak or rather fit in beautifully with it. So the materials I chose were pine cones, garland which were in a sense just a string of leaves, and flowers. The flowers I wanted to use were poinsettia and are technically toxic to pets so I chose to use a fake version. Just in case any traces were left behind of my project at the park. It’s kind of fitting in a way to use these materials now that I think about it with the holidays just around the corner. Anyways, my project idea is to do a low relief of a side profile of a horse’s head. I wanted to do a animal since it is nature I’m dealing with, with the natural park setting. The pine cones would be used for the head, ear and neck of the horse, while the garland would be the hair/mane of the horse. The flowers would be a decorative border to make it pop. & would also serve as a complementary purpose of the reds and greens. As for the principles & elements of design, the piece is united through the similar texture of the pine cones throughout. There is also a variety in the shapes and forms the pine cones take on to form the head and neck. There is an asymmetrical balance to the piece, from the smaller head on the left to larger neck and mane on the right hand side. One of the elements of design that really stood out in my piece was color, from the poinsettia. The vibrant red color from the poinsettia complemented the green and I thought was the perfect material chosen to be used for its applied color.

After several unsuccessful attempts, I decided to change my goal on this assignment. I decided that this time I focused on the process rather than the result. I took into account each of the design elements. The color that the space would provide me according to the different times of the day, for example. I was aware of the change that lines and shapes would undergo according to the impact of the environment. My assignment is based on the contrast between the dried bamboo. chopsticks (made of bamboo) and a living bamboo plant. The content of my piece is to reintegrate the dry bamboo poles and the chopsticks back into nature. I wanted to make a non-representational piece about the human instinct of permanence. I wanted to play with the concept of the return to the origin. A metaphor for the reintegration into nature after this life. Even after going through an industrialization process, chopsticks have been integrated back into the natural landscape and as well the dry bamboo poles. Over time, plants can climb up the bamboo poles and birds can perch on the chopsticks. I used the image of the bamboo forest in Japan to give a bit of context on the idea.

And this is the FINAL creation. I liked this much better because of the colors that the flowers gave. It made the piece overall much more vibrant and happy. I wanted my piece to be very symmetrical with the pattern. I made sure to have the same amount of objects for every layer of the circle because I wanted it to be even everywhere. I also made sure to get the same sized objects. Like all the rocks had to be the same size and so did the leaves because it would look uneven if they weren’t all the same.

My process for this assignment was using the dirt that was at the park and using a flat head screwdriver. the sticks i held kept on breaking. I started by creating four lines to parallel to each other and it created a rectangle. After making the rectangle I drew two lines going horizontal and vertical. kinda making it look like a window! Where the lines intersected, I drew a circle around where it is intersecting. After drawing the circle a kinda look like a bull’s-eye or a crosshair.
Once I do the circle I started adding some semi circles and some quarter circles to add some more details around the corners. And after I do those semi circles and all that I decided to add wavy lines going from corner to corner in a particular area. It was kind of cool because it looked like it was part of the window that cracked or shattered and the circle I was in the middle looks like it was the point of where it came in contact and broke the window. The most important element in My design is lines. Using lines I was able to create shapes and curves and as well as wavy lines. That’s basically what I have designed. I’ve created shapes with lines as like circles and rectangles and I was able to make curve shapes and wavy lines which is pretty cool.

For the Creative Process. I took my material outside of my house and working on the Earthwork Art on the street of my neighborhood. I placed my Color Pens into Square and I usually don’t like sitting on the Street so I have to knees down without sitting on the Street so I have to setting up my Color Pen into Square and it has a Pen Cap on it so they can hold the street and the Wind won’t blow them. I placed Pinto Beans into Arrows but they look like type of nuts and when I placed them. I knees down again without sitting on the street so the Pinto Beans can stay still without blowing away by the Wind. I took the Cereal out of the Box but they look delicious but they turn rotten. When I placed Cereal into Spiral. It looks great and It look good and tasty for breakfast. It took me 30 minutes to make Square with Spiral and Arrows when the cereal inside the square and the pinto beans outside of the square. The reason why I made the design of Square with Spiral and Arrows it’s because that I really like this Design since I made this Earthwork Art in the street of my neighborhood For the Elements Of Art. I think it was the Spiral as Line and Square as Shape of the Elements Of Art since it took me for a wild to make the Spiral as Line and Square as Shape. But it is finally done when I made this Design in the street and outside of my neighborhood.

I had a vague idea that I wanted to do something that involved collecting material and bringing it to another location to show it off. This ended up being a really simple project even though I spent all week scratching my head trying to figure out how to start. Spirals are a great shape because they are automatically balanced. When I decided I was going to use a bunch of cut rosemary, I knew I wanted to find a red-toned background to make the green of the plant really stand out. The spokes were kind of a last minute addition, but I thought it looked unfinished without them and the tail of the spiral was distracting from the rest of the shape. This makes use of line to create a shape. It is not quite radially symmetrical, but the spokes make it pretty close. They also create a repetition, where the inner spiral is technically singular. The shape is emphasized by the color contrast between the plant and the tanbark.

For my creative process I really wanted to use organic shape with natural materials and this was the great opportunity for me. I use geomatic shape to draw this. I use fallen leaves from the ground in my creative process as fall color gives a sense of the season. I used curved lines to give the shape and feeling of motion. Orange color attracts all the attention. For eyes I used coal Piece which I found near the grill in the park. I was amazed to see how can simple materials can be converted in a beautiful art work. Iwas having fun to make it.

For my final piece, I tried to keep the shapes very organic and natural. The lines are all curved giving the piece a sense of motion. I think the natural texture and separation throughout the leaves creates a very natural and calming feeling. I tried t incorporate a form of repetition in the piece with the outer rings gradually growing in size around the center piece. The final piece has a strong resemblance to the Target logo, but I still enjoy the look.

I made this art piece with the intent to portray being trapped within oneself. It is mainly about self-sabotage and the ability to do great things but unintentionally holding yourself back. The main focus is representative of one’s potential, a beautiful arrangement of nature items, but by being contained within the wood, the potential within is left to wilt if not released. The maze surrounding the focal point adds on to the layer and feeling of being trapped and never being able to find a way out. Something I, and most likely a lot of others, struggle with is being too critical on the work I create. By degrading your own creations and comparing it to those of artists more successful, you start to sow seeds of doubt on what you are truly capable of. We start to think “my art can never compare to [insert artist]” or “[insert artist] is so much younger and is already far better than me” until we totally lose our self-confidence and making art doesn’t become fun anymore, but instead becomes a competition. Everyone is capable of creating truly great things if only we could get out of our own heads and create for ourselves without comparing our progress to others. This piece isn’t limited to just art related issues as well, I feel like it can resonate with anyone who believes they aren’t good enough and are holding themselves back from fully achieving their dreams.

Our Potential (Close Up View)

Although the actual centerpiece was done on the spot after surveying my available materials, I did have some parts of my design that were planned ahead of time. I knew I wanted to created a picture frame out of the balsa wood from our past assignment. This would add on to how we are holding ourselves back since the frame holding the nature was once also created from nature. Another thing I had planned was the design I arranged around the frame, a maze with a singular entrance and exit. The idea behind it was that breaking this habit of how we view our own creations is a difficult thing to do but isn’t impossible.. it may feel like you are truly trapped but there is a path. Observing other artists can be very useful tool, but there needs to be awareness between constructively comparing and negatively comparing your work. For the actual arrangement within the picture frame, I wanted to incorporate as many elements and principles of design to create a visually appealing piece to represent one’s potential. Some examples of this is the use of multiple shades of green, asymmetrical balance, arranging the items to flow within the form, using a variety of actual textures, and having unity between all of the naturalistic objects. For the location, I chose a park with a nice grassy patch of land to represent the other beautiful artists and artworks that we tend to negatively compare ourselves to.

The first thing I did to start this project was I created a frame for the main focal point. I decided on using some of my balsa wood sticks to form a hexagon shape because it was easy to work with from the past projects and because it tied back to the nature concept. I thought a hexagon was an interesting shape to work with and sort of reminded me of honeycomb.

I used grass, not only because it was easily accessible, but because the phrase "The grass is always greener on the other side" came to mind. Since I knew I was going to place this frame in a patch of grass, I wanted to fill the bottom with some as well to keep the theme of unnecessarily comparing yourself to others.

In this area there was a lot of junk off to the side and i didn’t really want to use it but i did in the end because the piece of metal was the perfect shape and size i needed. so i started out the iris using sticks as i though i could find enough but i didn’t so i found some random bark and broke it into a small enough size to fit in the outline i created. I did plan this project out a lot more than i normally do only because it was so much larger then anything else i had made.

Final Product: "Persevering Balance"

So I kind of forgot to document in progress photos of me actually constructing this project. I am really satisfied with the final result. It took me a lot of time to make a free standing rock structure that also looked aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I thought about the environment and location, and I decided to take time to go to a local beach. I went to Santa Cruz area where there was some greenery in the background as well. To start the base of the structure, it needed to be sturdy and foundational. For that I used the biggest and flattest rock I could find. I wanted to make it as tall as I could, so I continued collecting larger flatter rocks for the bottom half of the rock tower. The concept itself is pretty simplistic, but the rock shape has to be so specific to making a taller, sturdy, and free standing sculpture. I fit rocks wherever made sense to me. To me this artwork holds deeper personal meaning to me. It resembles how much I have had to persevere through adversity and work hard to effectively balance out the different aspects of my life, and it is not easy. This process was very fun, but also difficult and time consuming.

I was really interested in toy and figurine photography, where small figures were placed in enviroments that made them more life-like. I thought clay would've been a great medium for an 'earthwork' since the reddish brown resembles a lot of the color in nature, and it's also literally material from earth. I wanted to make sure this figure was surrounded by either green brushes to contrast it, or a lot of dirt and trees to blend in with it.

I was pretty set on doing something with the fallen leaves I've been seeing everywhere as of late. The two big ideas I was stuck on was either to make a little maze from leaves, or a small map of the area where the sidewalk was. I realized I wouldn't be able to make a map with the lack of space in a sidewalk, so I ultimately decided on creating a small maze on the sidewalk. It would be a little cramped, but there aren't too many places I can go at the moment.

This is my finished project. I used minimal line to surround the hand, which created a very interesting visual with the shadows. I was influenced by certain visuals I had found in graphic design magazines, reminiscent of y2k and 90's tropes. I reduced the size of some of the lines for a better composition of the project. Drawing influence from sonic references is very important to me, this felt like a blend of digital and natural worlds. The digital symbol of a star, while also playing with real world objects like the rocks and the wooden hand.

The idea for this came between my first and second drawing . The idea I had in mind was a magical object(that could have been from a princess) discovered in the forest.
Materials:pebbles,feathers,flowers,makeup rose
I think the principles of design that this picture shows is unity and contrast. And some elements of art will be shape, color and texture.
Difficult part:I think it was having the sun light at the center. Also have to know where to exactly the materials will look good for the picture.
Place:park
I also enjoy doing this one but didn’t used as my final image probably because of the colors that didn’t give that autumn vibe . The background was my favorite part of this image the actual texture you can see.

This idea occurred to me because of the lines around the circle. The leaves around them have many colors like green, orange, yellow and red. But at the end i decided to only used orange and yellow since they represent is a sun. The pebbles in this represent how bright is the sun .And the flowers inside are colors based on Autumn time.
Materials:pebbles,leaves,flowers
Principles of art:shapes(circle, lines),colors(different colors combined),space (between objects)
Difficult part:Trying to find orange color. Also that the air disturbed the position of the leaves and have to resettled them.
I was really happy how this picture turn out because I didn’t thought it will come out better than I imagine and i think is mostly because of the colors that give that autumn sensation.
Place:park
