Red Flag #1 Proof By Verbosity

Definition:
Proof by Verbosity, is the use of an overwhelming amount of writing, or lecturing, to make it seem there is evidence to prove a theory.

Connection:
Although it seems related to other red flags, the use of religion is a great connection to the use of proof by verbosity as a red flag. When a child is young, and throughout their life, surrounding them with immense amounts of teaching, and theory, results in a belief hard to change. Having as much writing and teaching about religion as we have in modern history, we are still unable to scientifically prove that there is a biblical heaven or hell. Check out my Padlet post on the ideological reason for belief.

Here is an image depicting the mass amounts of library space attributed to religious teaching. This particular library benefits the argument of the religious theorist, it is that of the Vatican, Rome.

Red Flag #2 Mystical Energy

Definition:
In keeping with spiritual beliefs, there is another notable red flag of science called "Mystical Energy". Mystical Energy is the attribution of unexplained energy to the proof of a theory or product. When using mystical energy as evidence, the theorist is usually trying to sell a service or product that appeals to our needs.

Connection:
Using mystical energy to appeal to our needs, usually occurs when all other ways of solving the need are unmet by traditional methods of science. This can be dangerous, as it is often used by vulnerable populations, and prays on their hope for healing, success or resolution of a traumatic even. Hypnosis, Mind readers, and psychics use methods of mystical energy to appeal to our need.

Here is an article that shows the true vulnerability of a young woman who spent thousands on a psychic after a heartbreak.

https://www.elle.com/life-love/a12138853/seeing-psychics-after-breakup/

Definition:
Suppression by authority is the use of the argument that a figure of authority is preventing the evidence of knowledge to be shared openly. This is a crutch, that either prevents one from being to argue that there is no scientific evidence, or prevent them from looking for it/trusting it.

Connection:
In current events, we have seen the American media use the argument, that the evidence of crime is being suppressed by authority, to hide patterns of immigration and crime. When the statistics of crime are released, people of this group will argue that crime in the demographic they distrust, is being hidden. This group will use suppression of authority as an ethical reason to discriminate against people of various cultures, believing that they know or can see the truth being hidden.

Here is an article of the familiar case of Mollie Tibbetts. Using suppression of authorities groups have clinged to this one case to prove crime rates are not accurate
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/true-crime/wp/2018/08/21/mollie-tibbetts-has-been-found-dead-a-month-after-she-vanished-authorities-say/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.b273a12836a0

Definition:
All Natural is a single argument claiming that a product is all natural. This appeals to one conscious choice that we have all been programmed to beleive is better.

Connection:
A great example is the use of the Organic Symbol on grocery store products. This is something we all see regularly. With research we can find that any company can apply and pay a substantial fee to get this logo assigned to their food. New logos and organizations have been developed to claim the same. Some have better intentions than others, but collectively there are no specific legal requirements to application of these certifications. These certifications often enhance our perspective of the product.

Here is an article that talks about the concern of allowing companies that do not adhere to natural standards to claim the all natural red flag argument.

https://foodrevolution.org/blog/taking-action/organic-fraud-america/

Definition:
When we analyze why we believe in something, one of the most prevalent reasons that presents is ideology. Our world has many religions, and all of them teach a system of beliefs. Ideology gives a "reason" for believing.

Connection:
political ideology is also an example when, ideology is used as a reason to believe in the platform of a politician. Anti-abortiion activist for example, support politicians that claim to be highly religious, hoping they will follow their own ideology.

As this article explains, ideologies all represent some sort of distortion of reality:

https://folk.uio.no/sigurds/ideologier/Ideologies.pdf

Definition:
One of the other reasons people believe in the things they do, is trusting the unexplained. In some cases, people chose to belief that the source of their success, or health is because of unexplained or unexplainable means. With this reason, people chose to believe in the unexplained because they want to.

Connection
When a person has a large amount of missing memory, for example, they may rely on the unexplained. There have been claims of alien abductions, that are a crutch for a person that has a large amount of missing time. But how can this be scientifically proven?

Here is an article chronicling unexplained missing time, and the belief of the people who experienced it.
https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2013/05/strange-cases-of-missing-time/

Reason for Belief #3 - Perception and Observation

Definition:
Perception and observations are reasons for belief, because humans all perceive the world around them with attention on the things that relate to them. This means, that a people surrounded with a certain lifestyle see the world one way, while people in other lifestyles or cultures see them another. This is one of the many reasons humans tend to be in a state of perminent disagreement.

Connection:
Commonly we believe that our perception is a reliable tool for memory. Causing us to believe in the things we see or remember. However, if our perceptions are all different, that would explain why tools using perception are not legally used in court proceedings. Lie detector test for example, are at the mercy of the person reading the graph, what the lines mean, and the physical heart rate and respirations of a person. With all people handling stress differently, and with all basic vital signs different, it is an interpretation. controversy, memories of events can be skewed, a recalled differently as time progressing, making it difficult to trust or believe in someone/something that should be trusted.

What do you see in this image?
