Coding in october is wonderful!

- we read the story Friends (Eric Carle),

- we did Pixel Symmetry - we created the symmetry of a flower by coloring pixels (squares),

- we colored a picture of friends according to the code (numbers and shapes),

- we did the BeeBot challenge - we used arrows to form the shortest path according to the instructions and used them to program BeeBot.

Fireflies TEAM

In this activity, children receive a secret letter from a “friend.”
Their mission is to decode the message by coloring the pixels according to the color code and revealing the hidden text.

Below the message, they’ll find another coded section – this time, the sender’s name is hidden in symbols or pictures!
Using the provided code key, children must crack the code and discover which friend sent them the letter.

This activity combines creativity, problem-solving, and the basics of coding in a fun and friendly way!

- we made Pixel Symmetry – we created a heart symmetry by coloring pixels (squares),

- we colored pictures of hearts according to the code (numbers and colors),

- we deciphered and coded pictures according to the legend,

- we solved the friendship maze – we helped the boy find the right path to the girl,

- we made a jar of good deeds – we glued hearts into the jar and discovered the code of kindness and good deeds,

- we did the Beebot Challenge – we found paths between friends on the floor grid and collected as many hearts as possible.

- we read the story and the poem Today is Monday,

- we told a story using the cards from the poem Today is Monday,

- we did a BeeBot challenge - we used arrows to create a path that followed the foods in the poem (from Monday to Sunday),

- we decoded and encoded the pictures as shown in the legend

- we played online games where we tested our knowledge about healthy and unhealthy foods,

- we made a plate with our favorite foods - we cut out different foods from advertising flyers and stuck them on a plate to create our own plate of our favorite foods.

- listened to the song Today is Monday,

- did Pixel Symmetry - created the symmetry of the Christmas tree and Santa Claus by coloring pixels (squares),

- colored Christmas patterns - found the correct sequence of colors and continued the pattern,

- colored the picture according to the code (numbers and colors),

- solved Codebreaker - used the key to break the code,

- searched for pictures on the grid - followed the arrows and connected the path to the corresponding picture,

- solved the tasks in the Escape Room and helped save Christmas.

The children drew a color card, decoded it, and then colored the little boots according to the extracted card.

Because Saint Nicholas mixed up the little boots, he asks the children to help him by doing a color-coding activity together. The children will take turns picking a color card, decoding it, and placing the little boots on the board in the correct order.

Children use ScratchJr to program animals to move and find their food. Through this playful activity, they learn basic coding concepts such as sequencing and develop logical thinking while discovering what different animals eat.

- we placed the missing animal pictures in the right place in the Sudoku grid,

- we solved mazes where we helped the mother bear find the right path to the baby bear,

- by coloring pixels (squares), we copied the symmetry or the whole picture to the other side,

- we solved an online quiz where we tested our knowledge of the content of the fairy tale and played the online game Memory with animals from the story.

Create a large version of the grid on the floor using masking tape. One student acts as the Programmer (holding the arrow cards) and another acts as the Robot (Baby Bear). The "Robot" can only move when the "Programmer" shows a card!

Step 2: Create the Algorithm Place the Elephant card at a random spot on the grid and a "Start" token at another. Students must work together to place Command Cards (arrows) in a line to create a path for the "Robot" (another student or a toy) to reach the Elephant.

• Example: "Forward, Forward, Turn Right, Forward."

Step 3: Execute (Debug) A student acts as the "Robot" and follows the arrow sequence exactly. If they miss the Elephant, the group must "debug" their code by fixing the arrows.

Step 2: Stringing the Code Tape the cards in a horizontal line on the wall or floor. This is their "Script."

• Script: [SWIM] → [CLIMB] → [RUN] → [WALK] → [SLEEP]

Step 3: Execution Choose a student to be the "Boy" (the Actor). As the class reads the code aloud ("Swim! Climb! Run!"), the student performs the actions across the room until they reach the "Friend" (another student) at the end.

Step 4: The Debugging Challenge Switch two cards (e.g., put "Climb" before the River). Ask the students: "Will this code work? Can we climb across a river?" This helps them understand that the code must match the logic of the world.

A "Mission" is a code. To complete a mission, the Robot must follow the steps in the exact order. If they skip a step, the kindness isn't delivered!Kindness Action Cards (Icons):

• How to Play

  Step 1: Define the Mission Set up a grid on the floor using tape. Place a "Goal" card (like "Share a Book") on one square of the grid. Place the student (the Robot) at the "Start" flag.

  Step 2: Write the Program The "Programmers" (the rest of the class) work together to pick the arrows needed to get the Robot to the Kindness Goal.

  Step 3: Add an "Event" In coding, an Event is something that triggers an action.

  • Tell the students: "If the Robot reaches the 'Goal' square, then they must perform the Kindness Action."

  • When the student reaches the square, they perform the "Share a Book" gesture with a classmate.

  Step 4: Debugging (The "Oops!" Moment) Intentionally place an arrow in the wrong direction. When the Robot walks off the grid or misses the goal, ask: "Our kindness didn't reach our friend! How can we fix the code?" Let the students swap the arrow to "fix" the bug.

After watching the story "Baby Bear, Baby Bear what do you see" (Eric Carle) and listening to the song on the computer, the students then suggested other animals the little bear might see. They drew them and programmed the mouse robot to meet them, following instructions given to them by a classmate.

The students helped the little bear find his mom by planning the correct route through the maze.

Working in small groups, children observe the table and color each square (pixel) according to the number shown in the grid and its matching color, developing matching skills, concentration, and fine motor abilities. The coding key can vary from group to group, resulting in each team producing a differently colored rooster.

Through this process, children understand that when the code changes, the final outcome changes as well, experiencing in a hands-on way basic concepts of computational thinking and early programming.

- We programmed Bee-Bot to avoid sharks and move among the fish, guiding it from the ship to the treasure.

We love pancakes and we wrote a recipe.We look for the most commons ingredients and had fun!

In this way, logical thinking, observation skills, and problem-solving abilities are developed, while children are introduced to basic concepts of computational thinking, such as recognizing patterns and applying rules.

In February, Eric Carle's book 'The Rooster Went Out to See the World' was read. After discussing the book, they completed the coding activity on the provided coding activity page by pasting the arrows in the appropriate directions.
