I see a connection to the mom in Black Boy because she is being violent with him to try to stop him from getting in a dangerous racially charged event. "Toya Graham said Tuesday she did it because she didn't want her son to become another Freddie Gray."

This article tells us that a lot of today's criminals suffer from an emotional or physical separation from their parents. This connects to Black Boy because his father left him and his family and his mom isn't really there for him now that she is sick and before she would beat him. Richard, much like the criminals today, were abused and neglected by their own families. I was predicting of how Richard will turn out in the book after reading this and I don't think his future will be good because of the abuse and neglect in his life.

The African American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws—everything from the death penalty to enforcement of our drug laws. And that ends up having an impact in terms of how people interpret the case."

This article explained what happened after "white" men came to North America and forced the Native Americans to take on the "white" culture. I think it connects to the book Black Boy because just like the Native Americans, the "blacks" are being forced to take on "white" culture as their own. "This process involved removing some Native Americans from their lands and resettling them elsewhere and forcing semi-nomadic people into a sedentary, non-nomadic lifestyle."

This article explained that the racial wealth gap is a serious problem; it explained that white people have (on average) six times the amount of wealth as black or Hispanic people, which means for every six dollars a white person has, a black or Hispanic person only has one dollar. In comparison to this, the wage gap is a white man making two times the amount as a black or Hispanic man makes, so for every two dollars a white man makes, a black or Hispanic makes only one dollar. White people (on average) are on a higher accumulation curve than black people or Hispanic people. I see a connection between this and Black Boy because in Black Boy, Richard's family is very poor due to not being able to make as much money as white people. especially with him only having his mother to provide for him.

Ableism is a social pattern in which people who are disabled are treated differently, to an unnecessary degree, than those who are not.
This a great example of oppression because society devalues and limits the potential of humans with disabilities. People with disabilities always face many kinds of daily barriers.
Many of us don't understand how the world is wired for them. Yet we still decide to treat them like if their not human.
This connects to Black Boy in how Richard is being oppressed because they believe he can't do more. This could relate to the theme of empowerment because in these both situations, someone has power over another based on appearance.
Also their so much prejudice in for many individuals in both situations. According Six Forms of Ableism by Julie Zeinlinger, the author says, "discrimination or prejudice against individuals with disabilities". This shows how discrimination is still a problem to this day.
https://mic.com/articles/121653/6-forms-of-ableism-we-need-to-retire-immediately#.dfQhYv3GO
-D.R

We recently had another scare relating to gun violence. Students feared coming to school and many were reminded of what happened last year at the local mall. Violence leaves scars that we don't heal from easily. "Four people were killed in a shooting ...at a mall in Burlington, Washington" The level of violence faced by young people is escalating as our culture appears to be growing more and more numb. I see this as parallel to the numbness that Richard describes as he gets accustomed to the violence in his home and community.

A study done in a low income, and violent neighborhood showed that children experiencing 4 types of trauma are 30x more likely to have behavior and learning problems.I see this correlation because Richard tends to have behavioral issues, like being talked into becoming the town drunk at like 8 years old, burning down the house, and killing a kitten because he was constantly beaten, and was once beaten to unconsciousness once.

I see this as connected to the mixed impact that religious views can have on minorities in our country. Black lives matter because, as human life, black lives are often dis acknowledged in the insistent universalization that 'all lives matter' ". This part, specifically, reminded me of both stories I wrote about but mostly the one about Richard's fear of white people. This country was built centuries ago on slaved black people who happened to be a huge part of that because it was them who helped start the country. They suffered while working away and helping create the country we have today. Their suffering relates directly back to 'Black Boy' because even when the black are successful, they're wrongly mistreated because of segregation and differences.

Wrong of Affirmative Action in Colleges

I was reading about how Colleges are able to use what is call affirmative action to select students. This is where they try to make the campus diverse but letting a certain amount of each race in. This is wrong because getting into school should be based solely on grades, extra curricular activities, and definitely not race!
This is connected to black boy because he talks about how he and his family members are looked down on because of race. We should not judge by color in college admissions, jobs, drinking fountains. Nothing should be judged by color because we are all people.

In the article it say that children behavior comes from family stresses like domestic violence , social support, and living situations. How this connects to black boy is because Richard gets abused at home and he gets into fights at school
