Shakespeare uses blood to showcase a major change in character and a rising theme of  actions will always follow you. Macbeth went through many changes throughout the play starting as early as act two. After taking away the bloody daggers Macbeth sees his hands dripping in blood and says, “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood/Clean from my hands? No. This my hand will rather/The multitudinous seas incarnadine,/Making the green one red”(Shakespeare II.ii.79-81). The blood dripping from Macbeth's hands is not his own however. He is starting to realize there is no turning back from his mistakes and he is going to live the rest of his life as a murderer. Shakespeare not only uses this scene but also motif as a change in character for Macbeth as he starts to become very power-hungry. This also starts to apply to Lady Macbeth in the later acts when she follows Macbeth's footsteps. During one of Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking nightmares she sees her hands and screams, "What, will these hands ne’er be clean?...Here’s the smell of blood still. All the perfumes/of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand," (Shakespeare V.i.31-47). Lady Macbeth's hands will never seem clean to her due to the blood of the ones she has once killed. Similar to the beginning of the play she will never feel like the same person as she was before she was involved in murder. She is saying even the most luxurious perfume could not clean her hands and cover up the fact that she will never be innocent. Throughout the play there are many moments of dramatic and verbal irony where readers are able to see a character's real traits. In scene three there is an example of dramatic and verbal irony that Shakespeare uses to showcase Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's true intentions. Macbeth makes a toast at dinner one night and says, “I drink to the general joy o' the whole table,/ And to our dear friend Banquo, whom we miss;/ Would he were here!” (Shakespeare III. iv 108-110). This is an example of dramatic irony because the reader knows Macbeth is  being very duplicitous and is planning on doing the opposite he says. Macbeth uses verbal irony to talk about how much he loves Banquo and how he misses him, however he is actually planning on killing him in order to gain more power. Later on during the play we are able to see how Lady Macbeth goes through many changes which leaves her like a new person. Towards the end of the play after Macbeth's death has been announced, Malcolm ends the play and concludes, "Of this dead butcher and his fiend-like queen, Who, as 'tis thought, by self and violent hands Took off her life;" (Shakespeare V.viii.82-84). This is an example of situational irony because nobody would have expected Lady Macbeth to die of a suicide. Throughout the whole play she always seemed very brave and strong because of the way she would act around others. Shakespeare does a very good job in creating ironic moments in the play to showcase the unexpected actions of each character.

Nothing is ever as it seems especially in Shakespeare's Macbeth. A major theme throughout the play is appearances are deceiving and that a person should never always trust what they see. In the beginning of the play during act one Lady Macbeth and Macbeth started to fake who they were in order to change other's opinions. When figuring out a plan on how to kill Duncan, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth states, “I am settled, and bend up/Each corporal agent to this terrible feat./ Away, and mock the time with fairest show:/ False face must hide what the false heart doth know” (Shakespeare I. vii. 92-95). They were planning on killing Duncan in order to become very powerful and take his place in throne. However, once he is killed the two of them were planning to pretend to be heartbroken and distraught by his death because they loved him so much. The plan was to have nobody ever except them to be the ones behind his death. Towards the end of the play Macbeth realizes that many things he has done in his life were not the best choice. In act five when Macbeth is all alone sitting in his castle he starts to think, "They have tied me to a stake. I cannot fly,/But bearlike I must fight the course./What’s he/That was not born of woman? Such a one/Am I to fear, or none”(Shakespeare V.vii.1-4). After everything Macbeth has fought for he realizes he isn't as happy as he thought he would truly be. Macbeth starts to feel very useless and weak which makes him wish he should of never believed the witches. This scene showcases the theme of appearances are deceiving because although Macbeth seemed like he was very content and happy with how he life was turning out, he finally realizes this is not how he wanted his life to be like.
