How does the author indicate a change in one of the characters? (Carson)

Marji, the main character, shows the most signs of change in the novel. The author indicated her changes throughout by her reading and informing herself on all the politics going on in her country. She learns about the situation from her parents, uncle, grandparents, and school. The author shows how she develops her own opinions about everything, and about how independent she becomes. Marji grows older throughout the novel, and becomes more rebellious by cutting class, going to parties, and lying to her parents. The author even shows how much her parents trust her by sending her to Austria by herself at the end of the book. She promises to stay true to herself.

Which technique seems the most successful in revealing the turmoil of the changes in the society? (Carson)

Some techniques the author used to show the turmoil of the society were the expressions of the people, the violent scenes, word bubbles, and dialogue. The expressions of the characters during the extreme situations of chaos really help show the readers that the characters are scared frightened, or angry. The expressions are very vivid, and definitely help contribute to the height of certain situations. The author drew some violence during demonstrations and torture sessions in the novel which contributed to the extremeness of the destruction taking place on Marji's people's lives. The word bubbles helped show the sacredness of the people by quoting their fear with words. "For the first time in my life, I saw violence with my own eyes." (Satrapi 76/6). Marji would express her fear with her words, along with her family.

In what ways is the family in the book similar to yours? How is it different? (Mekenzie)

Marji's family seems to really care for one another. Especially towards the ending of the book we see that her parents want the best for her daughter. Ultimately, they want their daughter to be safe and well. They seem to differ from my family because of the differences of beliefs between Marji and her parents.

What similarities and differences can you identify between the politics of the Middle East and those in your country? (Mekenzie)

In the MIddle East, standards for citizens are a lot different from our standards. We see the women are forced upon wearing a veil due to religious reasons. Also, the liberal views of iranians are prominent and very important to them. Here, we see a lot more freedom.

How does the author use diction effectively? (Lilly)

The author Marji Satrapi used diction really well because there's no slang, like it's or anything like that. ANd she used words that related to iran and iraq with their currency and the pictures had arabic written in some of them. And I just think that Satrapi did a good job writing this.

How is the role of religion in this book similar to that in your own community? How is it different? (Lilly)

In their community Marji became less religious as she got older, she didn't talk to god anymore because of what happened to her uncle. She stopped talking about how she wanted to be a prophet. And I think that here no one really knows but they assume. And I feel like they had a few different religions there, because the Baba-Levy's were some of the only jews around and they stayed because they had lived there for a really long time and that was home.but not as much as here.
