It's not just hormones

Teens often make poor choices and then lie to cover them up. It's a traditional viewpoint to just blame it on their hormones, but there's more going on. One of the biggest reasons for the often bizarre teen behaviors is that there are rapid and massive structural changes occurring. Areas in their brains are doubling or tripling in size, and making new connections. They are trying to "catch-up" to what is happening in their brain.

Let the kids sleep!

More than 50% of students over the age of 13 are sleep deprived!! Lack of sleep throws off the brain's rhythm, which plays a key role in understanding and influencing cognitive performance, memory processes, visual perception, levels of arousal, performance, mood, and behavior. It's important that children are getting the recommended eight hours of sleep each night in order to prepare them for the next day.

The balancing act

Children are balancing a lot while they are in school. They are tying to make friends, quench thirst or hunger, and interact with classroom visitors. All the while, trying to avoid the dangers of embarrassment, failure, or harm-which at this age, is what they're most concerned about. These are things that children deal with every day. It is hard for them to manage their academics with their personal lives and all the changes going on within their bodies. It's exhausting.

At this age, children do not care about how nutritious a food item is. They care about how it tastes and how quickly they can receive it. Therefore, children at this age do not often make very smart or healthy food choices. Nutritional deficits have been known to decrease test scores, reduce learning ability, and impair cognition. It is important that students eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and make healthier choices in their meals and snacks to help keep them focused and learning in class.

An increase in physical activity in turn increases cognition, memory, and reduces the likelihood of depression. Children who are engaged in daily physical activity not only show consistently superior motor fitness, but also show better academic performance and a better attitude towards school.
