If I act bored while I instruct, how can I expect the kids to be any different. I think giving kids challenging problems, helping them be successful by scaffolding instruction, and watching them get better with their work helps spark curiosity and a desire to keep doing well. I think it can be a challenge to find something that sparks some kids. They may have interests, but they may not integrate well into whatever we're studying in class. I feel like some students are playing educational limbo, "how low can we go?" It's discouraging and absolutely ridiculous! I have seen children with ability and intelligence waste it because they are so apathetic. Some students also want things to be quick and easy, like a microwavable meal. When they encounter a problem/task that is multi-stepped, they want to just stop because of their lack of interest in keeping up their efforts. I later heard the professor I had for the course, whom I enjoyed and learned A LOT from, was a professor to avoid. The educational system provided students the opportunity to do NOTHING and still pass. Unfortunately, reality is hitting some of my kiddos hard this year. When I first started teaching, I was too scared to do certain activities, projects, or field trips that I wanted my students to experience from fear of being judged by the veteran teachers.
