What is the Maria Montessori Approach

The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centred educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. she found that when she was doing her studying and research, she was putting on different activities that used different materials in the children's environment and looked to see what sort of resources that children were interested and engaged in. when she was doing this she also found out that when children were placed in an environment where the activities promoted their essential development then they will be able to teach themselves . Maria Montessori Approach takes a holistic approach to children's development as one of this aims to her approach is to look at the child as a whole. Her approach is based on independent activities, so this involves hands on learning. to help this process teachers will provide children with age appropriate activities. Montessori St Nicholas (ND) says “She saw that children learn best of doing and that happy self-motivated learners form positive images of themselves as confident, successful people” the materials and equipment that Montessori used where used specially to help children's independence.

They are eight main principles to the Montessori Education, theses are Movement and Cognition, Choice, Interest, Extrinsic Rewards are Avoided, Learning with and from Peers, Learning in Context, Teacher Ways and Child Ways and Order in Environment and Mind. Movement and Cognition is part of the Montessori Education as in the nursery setting they put the beds on the floor instead of putting them in cribs they put them the floor so they can move around freely to explore the room and receive objects. in a school classroom they will encourage children to wash the tables so as they doing this they children will be moving, and the older children will carry out verbal commands that are written on cards. Choice is another important principle of Montessori Education this is because it lets children freely chose what their want to play with from the resources that are out. They work it for as long as they are inspired to, then they put it away and select something else.

Another important principles is Montessori education is interest this is designed to awaken interest and to allow children to pursue learning about issues that already personally interest them. he Montessori education encouraged their children to lock and do research about things that inspire and interest them so for example this could be roller-skating, so they could ask the children to learn about how wheels move through their interest. the next principle is about Extrinsic rewards been avoided according to research it shows that children how are given a reward will rush through an activity and therefore will have a short concentration span then those children who are not given rewards for engaging in a learning activity. this is why in Montessori classroom they don't have grades and don't rank the children, the teacher come up with their own ways to encourage the children to develop their intrinsic motivation. the children engage in their learning as this is their reward.

Teacher Ways and Child Ways and Order in Environment and Mind are some more important principles in Montessori Education. Teachers interaction should be too much but not to little either. for this method of education the teachers and adults have to go through intensive training. in Montessori Education they allow a child to struggle with a project or a problem long enough to learn from it, but not so long that they become frustrated by it. this is going to allow children to use trail and error and experimental learning. In a Montessori classroom the children engage and pace their own learning independently the teacher is there to help the if they need it but the teacher will only offer help in the right amounts. Order in the Environment in a Montessori Classroom everything is in its place, and the children are quiet. the teachers in a Montessori classroom have an important goal and this it to arrange the environment in a way that will facilitate the children's learning. "an orderly environment assists your child in developing mental order and intelligence".

Learning with and from Peers and Learning in Context are two of the main important principles to Maria Montessori Approach. Learning with and from Peers is helpful when you are in Montessori Education as you will be placed in mixed age groups so for example 6-9 years old. this will help children to learn form others and they can teach each other. A younger child can excel and teach their peers. Children learn at an early age to depend on and help each other. Learning in context in Montessori education is about if the materials have concrete properties where they help develop the "isolation of difficulty and the isolation of quality". this information is form IMA(2017). The children learn to think and discover on their own with the Montessori materials.
