Someone who taught me something meaningful was Stephanie Harvey. She taught me that curioisity is the core to future learning and collaboration. As a result, I still think about curioisty and bring that to my students and my work daily.

My kids teach me to be present everyday - 9yo, 7yo, and 4yo. It has slowed me down - made me not as interested in output, and reminded me to look for the beauty in everything! :)

Mr. Lewis, my high school English teacher in grades 10 and 11, used to read snippets from the daily newspaper to make explicit connections to whatever we were reading. As one of my inspirations to become a teacher, I am continually mindful of Mr. Lewis' impact on me and I try to honor him by making similar connections. This way students may see the relevance of "old" texts in their lives and the world in which they live.

Who? My college roommate took me on a hiking trip in VT (many moons ago).

What? I learned that being in the mountains feeds my soul in ways that I was unaware. She taught me I could climb for hours and taking time out of the everyday supports my whole being.

How? I have climbed many peaks since then, moved to Colorado for a bit, and continue to share my love of hiking with young people.

One of my greatest teachers was George Lee, my Freshman Photography teacher. Whenever I asked George a question he would answer by showing me how to ask the camera the question. It was a great lesson in learning through my curiosity manifested as work.

My 5th grade teacher Mr. W. Taught me to be curious and wonder. Never to let the system hold you back he would say. It started with the drawing of a grasshopher and wonder what life is like for them and what are they thinking jumping around as they are about mocing forward in life and how we do that as humans with positivity I think about that when I do my work and challenge my other students.

Someone who taught me something meaningful is my mentor, Renee Hobbs. When I first began teaching and facilitating, I felt a lot of pressure to make sure I was designing the perfect activity to prompt engagement from my college students. Her constant reminder that "if you're having fun, they're having fun" reframed that mentality and reminded me that my own engagement and enthusiasm sets the tone. I've gotten so much feedback from my college-aged students that they appreciate the free and fun atmosphere that we create together.

Someone who taught me something meaningful was my highschool teacher Bob Miles. He had a large wooden spoon in his class (taller than he was) and every time someone asked a question that required just a simple answer, he would take out the wooden spoon and ask us to think by ourselves without needing to be spoon fed all of the answers. It caused me to really love the idea of inquiry and asking questions rather than just searching for answers.

Steve Frantz, first principal I was an assistant to and has been an admin mentor, taught me to seek out different perspectives from my own and in that process, you will make better informed decisions as an instructional leader. To this day, I appreciate hearing from different perspectives to gain a full sense of things before making a decision...

My second grade teacher, Suzy Kline (author of the Horrible Harry books) taught me the joy and power of writing. This still influences me because I love to write and use writing every day in my personal and professional life. As a result, I still write every day and have made it part of my job and my life.

My dad. I learned that being someone who listens and cares for the people around them, really centering relationships, adds a lot of value to a space / place / community. It influences me still to this day to seek this out in others but to also be a source and model of this kind of style.

My co-worker Katie taught me to reach out for help when I’m frustrated. It helps me overcome my fear that I’ll be judged.
