The Europeans traveled in the 15th century by wooden ships. They often used (once invented) an astrolabe which helped mark their position by using the stars. As to why there were many reasons. Among them being, wealth, religion, and political power. All of which were found, kept, and held on to for hundreds of years.

How did Portugal, Spain,Britain, and the Dutch gain their riches through trade?

There were four main players in 15th century trade, and those of which being the Portuguese, Dutch, Spain, and Britain. Portugal was the first to gain power to their early advantage in guns and seamanship. Vasco de Gama helped in this by becoming the first man to reach Asia by sea traveling around the Cape of Good Hope to get there. By managing to get there first the Portuguese were able to build port cities before anyone else in India. Another Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, was the first to circumnavigate the world. Secondly, Britain found their riches by sailing along the New England coastline with John Cabot at the helm. They eventually took New Netherlands from the Dutch later. The Dutch were mostly known for the East and West India Trading Companies and New Netherlands. They also gained trade through the Hudson River. Last but not least is the Spanish. The Spanish colonized everywhere but Brazil. Finally they used encomienda and mita to take advantage of Native Americans and also destroyed the Aztec and Incan civilizations with disease to gain gold.

How was Africa impacted by the slave trade?

Africa was very negatively impacted by the slave trade during this time. Most healthy men and women were taken away leaving just the elderly and children behind. A civilization that is easily represented by this change is Benin. Benin after the slave trade went into ruin. Raids and warfare increased, art deteriorated, human sacrifice increased, and there were less belief in the gods. King Afonso of Congo urged the European rulers to stop, but of course they did not listen. Neighboring countries did not help each other until they themselves were being traded away. Finally, the same countries would even help the Europeans trade them away then instantly be traded away as well.

What political systems and cultures remained in Africa during this period?

Africa was not very changed by the Europeans when it came to political systems. Most governments such as lineage groups and monarchies stayed as the main type of government. There was a more significant change in the culture of Africa. New weapons were introduced along with food and clothing. Finally, the traditional middle east trade routes would become absolete as the trade routes would head now towards to the west coast instead.

The Portuguese occupation of the Moluccas and how the Dutch pushed them out.

The Portuguese were the the first to get to the Spice Islands due to their early guns and seamanship advantage. They signed a treaty with a local ruler and gained control of all the spice trade for awhile. The Dutch and English however came in very quickly and ruined the Portuguese. Much more so the Dutch as they took almost every Portuguese trade port and drove the English to only one port on the coast of Sumatra. Finally, they then proceeded to focus on their island of Java which they originally held in 1619 which they were able to get back.

How arrival of Europeans effected Malay.

The Melaka were very unaffected by the arrival of the Europeans. They united with others to mostly fend off the Europeans from completely invading. Politically the Melaka were not impacted much as they already had many monarchies in place already. Some islamic states used a sultan who used a bureaucracy to carry out the rules of the government. Finally, they were culturally impacted like Africa but not completely as they did change religion to Islam and Christianity due to the traders they met.
