GMOs are organisms that have genes from other species injected into them to have a certain characteristic or trait. This is a problem because some scientists are now arguing that GMOs can cause health risks as well as are simply unsafe to consume.

GMO Compass (2010, June 30) "USA: In 2010, more genetically modified crops once again," Retrieved From: downtoearth.org

Consumers should be able to know what's in the foods they are purchasing for both his/herself to consume and for their families to consume. Even more importantly, "...those practicing certain religions will be able to more easily determine if a produce has been modified with animal DNA" (Davis). This is oftentimes overlooked because companies are worried over losing money, and if a certain animal product is in a food, it won't be purchased by a fairly large group of people. Also, in sixty-four other countries, GMO labeling of some sort is required.

Just Label It! (2017, December 8) "Labeling Around the World" Retrieved From: justlabelit.org

Consumers don't completely understand the concept of what GMOs are and don't understand that not absolutely all GMOs have been proven to be harmful. Some GMs are entirely harmless and nontoxic to humans. Also, to put a system into place that would cause for all GM products to be labeled, the cost to do so would hit the consumers through the prices of the products which would also be a blow to many different manufacturers (Davis). Along with that, products that are GMO free tend to be labeled as such because that can attract certain people's eyes.

I once had to read a book titled The Omnivore's Dilemma written by Michael Pollan. He visited many different farms and plants that were in different sections of production. (Industrial, Industrial-Organic, etc.) and I remember being almost annoyed reading the book. Although it had a lot of valid information that was displayed in an interesting way, I found myself feeling as though it was biased and didn't display every side.
