Look in the grade level/course above and below and find that same TEKS. How does the language change for the expectations each year?

When I look at the TEKS from Kindergarten through Second grade you can notice how they build on each other. In Kinder they are given basic instructions on how to Collab in a group with just being able to follow simple instructions like discussing and taking turns. Then when they get into first grade they should be able to remember what they learned from Kindergarten when it comes to listen to other students and speaking when being recognized. Finally, in Second grade they carry all of those previous traits from prior the prior grade they should be able to know build on the ideas of the other students in their groups. The expectations get a little harder as the students enter a higher-grade level. It should be like this because we should be challenging the students mind as they progress.

What language could you use to connect to the previous year, or to let them know what is coming next year? You are looking to make a school connection that emphasizes the important of this material.

This can be difficult because many of the students may have not went to pre-k, so this would be a learning experience for them. I would start out with basic rules that they hear almost everywhere such as, “don’t talk when someone else is talking,” or “treat others the way you want to be treated.” That way it’s a refresher to some students while it’s also an introduction for others.

Next, what language could you use to connect this TEKS to real-life? This is an important connection to be making on a daily basis in the classroom.

This TEKS is a great way to show students how to listen in a classroom. So, examples like, how to take turns, to listen when another student is speaking or when a teacher is instructing or talking and working together and building on each of their ideas to make a bigger idea.

Then, give an example about your TEKS that connects to one of the videos, Problem Based Learning or Student Driven Learning, that you could incorporate in your class.

I feel I can connect my TEKS to the Students Driven Learning video. Why? Because in order for students to feel like they can Collab or have an opinion about something I have to allow myself as a teacher to make them feel like they have a voice.

Finally, share your thoughts on the TEKS and the classroom teacher's responsibility for aligning their instruction and assessment with all the TEKS of their year. Be honest, tell me what you are thinking.

I believe this should be not only the very first lesson of the year, but it should also be a lesson throughout the school year! I think many teachers, especially teachers of younger grades, completely skip over this and then there’s chaos. This is one of those skills that is going to be used everywhere the student goes and they must know how to properly listen, take turns, and work with others.
