O'Brien's Tower is a circular stone tower that stands approximately halfway up the cliffs and marks the highest point of the cliffs. It was built by Sir Cornellius O'Brien in 1835 as a viewing point for tourists who came to the place at that time. From the top of the watchtower you can see the Aran Islands and Galway Bay, and in the background the Maumturk Mountains in Connemara. O'Brien also built a slab wall along the Cliffs of Moher and is said locally to have built everything in the area except the cliffs.

The garden was officially opened on the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 Rising. The focus point is a magnificent sculpture by Oisín Kelly, based on the legend of the Children of Lir, in which four children are transformed into swans and remain so for 900 years before becoming human again. A poem by Liam Mac Uistin is inscribed on the wall behind the sculpture. It concludes: ‘O generations of freedom remember us, the generations of the vision.’

The garden is intended as a place of quiet remembrance. It is a perfect place to enjoy some respite from the clamour of the city.

Irish music sessions are open to all types of musical instruments from Ireland and in some cases from other regions or cultures.

The most important thing is to have one or more melodic instruments, such as the fiddle, which is the instrument played by the Irish in the highest percentage. It is also vital to have a good repertoire, which can be accompanied by instruments such as guitars or percussion.

GUITAR AND FIDDLE DUO

The guitar and fiddle have been excellent partners in Irish and world music. This type of grouping is very common as it is versatile and pleasing to the ear. The fiddle with its agility and grace intonates the traditional melodies, while the guitar supports the rhythm and harmony.

A well-known duet in Irish traditional music is that of Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill.

12.Are creatures from Irish mythology, small elves known for their cunning and for guarding or hiding treasures in pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. It is said that if you capture a leprechaun, it must grant you three wishes to be released. They are depicted as old, bearded men dressed in green coats and pointed hats.

According to some experts, the word leprechaun comes from the ancient Celtic Irish god and cultural hero Lugh. Lugh was initially the god of the sun and light, and later became the great warrior and ruler of ancient Ireland. Lugh's stature (literally) diminished over time as the Christianization of Europe accelerated. Eventually, he transformed into Lugh-chromain, meaning "Lugh bent," as he came to inhabit the underground world of the sidh where all the other gods were relegated as people forgot the old traditions and embraced new religions. Lugh thus becomes a sort of fairy craftsman, and from there, evolves into the "leprechaun," the diminutive elf of medieval folklore

It was built in 1816 and was originally named the Wellington Bridge after the Duke of Wellington. However, it is more commonly known as the Ha'penny Bridge because of the toll that pedestrians had to pay to cross it when it first opened – one half penny, hence the name. The bridge is made of cast iron and features decorative lamps and arches, giving it a charming and historic ambiance. It's one of the most iconic and photographed landmarks in Dublin, and it remains a popular spot for both locals and tourists to stroll and enjoy views of the river.

Festivals: Autumn Harvest Festival

It takes place in Ireland, where farmers take their crops to the city to trade and sell. The potatoes are used to make Poteen, a drink sold at fairs. There is a lot of dancing, singing, music and storytelling.

Samhain

It was the Celtic New Year. This festival began when the Celts in Ireland honored Saman or the Lord of the Dead. Currently what is called Halloween is celebrated in many other countries around the world. Children dress up in costumes and masks and carry lighted lanterns from house to house to receive treats or play tricks. The lanterns they carry are often made of turnips with scary faces and candles inside. Pumpkin lanterns are also used.

Beginning of November

It is a night when fairies are said to appear. Legend has it that fairies are sad because they open the graves of the dead and dance with the ghosts in the tombstone cemetery. They also try to capture a deadly musician to play with them.

Martinmas

A Celtic tradition was to kill animals on this day as food for the winter. The blood of a small rooster was sprinkled on the doors of houses to keep evil spirits away. Today, farmers put religious medals in the four corners of their fields..

ash sunday

This day is celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent. Single people are marked with ashes upon entering the church. Traditionally, Catholics were not allowed to marry during Lent, so they had to wait until after Easter. Marking them with ashes was a form of mockery for not being married.

Saint Patrick's day

The clover, a typical element in the Saint Patrick festival.

It is the day of the country's biggest national holiday where everything is dressed in green and the day of the patron saint of Ireland is celebrated in style.

May Festival

It is a popular festival that has been celebrated since before Christianity and is still celebrated with dances and flower picking. The bushes are decorated with flowers or eggshells, which are symbols of life.

Bonfire Night

Originally, animals and human bones were burned to appease the gods at the stake. Bonfire Night later became a celebration of St. Patrick's eternal flame on the shortest night of the year. Now it is celebrated with dances and stories around the fire.

St. John's Eve.

In Ireland it is believed that on St. John's Eve the soul leaves the body and visits the place where it will finally end up..

Summer day

Country fairs are held with dancing and singing. The festival is primarily a Celtic fire festival, representing the middle of summer, and the shortening of the days in its progressive march of winter. San Juan is traditionally celebrated on either June 23 or 24, although the longest day actually falls on June 21.

Orange Day Parade

Every year on July 12, the Orangemen hold a parade. People gather to listen to religious and political speeches. Orange Day is the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, when James II lost his throne to William of Orange.

Lughnasa

Traditionally, the beginning of the harvest was celebrated with festivities dedicated to the pre-Christian god Lugh. It is and was a celebration of the first harvest celebrated on September 29 and is also known as the Feast of Saint Michael.

Puck Fair

Held each year in August, the town of Killorhlin in County Kerry prepares for a three-day fair.

During the first day, stalls are opened to sell food and drink and booths are open for trade and barter, on this day a large goat is decorated with ribbons and paraded through the streets. The goat is crowned "King of the Fair" and is placed on a three-story platform in the center of the city.

On the second day, a livestock exhibition is held. Horses, donkeys, carts and carts are sold.

On the afternoon of the third day, King Puck is carried out of town by a bagpiper to the accompaniment of traditional Irish music. This means the end of the fair.

Handball is played on a court or "alley". Originally, an alley was used with a front wall, from which the ball was to be hit, although a smaller alley was also introduced, the first in Ireland in 1969.

This size is now the standard in the international version of the game, but both alleys are still used in the Gaelic game, with two separate championships run by the Gaelic Athletic Association.

The object of the game is to score a total of points before your opponent does. Points are scored only by the person serving the ball. The serving player has two opportunities to hit the ball, from the "service area", off the "front wall" and across the "short line".

Players take turns hitting the ball against the "front wall" before the ball bounces twice on the court floor after their opponent's previous shot. Most handball games take place on a four-wall court, but there are also versions of the three-wall and one-wall game.

Its translation is tin whistle and it has received different names depending on the region such as Penny whistle and feadóg stain. In the case of the Irish whistle, we can find four types:
Cuts, the best known ornament.
Taps, the opposite of Cuts.
Rolls, one of the most complex.
Crans, widely used with bagpipes.

The Irish bagpipe or elbow bagpipe, in Irish Gaelic uilleann pipes and sometimes called Irish Bagpipes, is a musical instrument of the bagpipe or bagpipe family. It is the characteristic national bagpipe of Ireland. There is debate about when bagpipes appeared among the Celtic peoples of Atlantic cultures, although statuettes of bagpipers in several archaeological sites from Roman times suggest that it was possibly the Romans who introduced them.

The Irish dance world has expanded to include performances of Lord of the Dance, Celtic Tiger, and Heartbeat of Home.

These dances are danced with the aid of regional instruments such as the Irish drum or fiddle in conjunction with the concertina (and other similar instruments), guitar, whistle or flute.

Irish dancing takes many forms:

Far from the glamor of shows like Riverdance and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, and the super-fast feet of the Gardiner brothers, social media stars (and five-time world champions), Ireland retains a deep love for traditional dance and the history and heritage it represents.

Irish dancing has been around for centuries. The styles have evolved and absorbed other cultural influences. But in general, they include different dances, such as step dancing, jig, sean nós, céilí and Irish tap dancing.

Keep traditions alive:

In Tralee, on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way, far from the Dublin auditorium where Riverdance managed to make Irish dance sexy, the task of passing on local heritage and traditions to the next generation continues.

At Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theater Company of Ireland , they practice munnix dancing, which dates back to the 18th century and is considered the origin of modern Irish dancing.

Unlike Riverdance, Munnix doesn't have designer dresses, epic ringlets, or huge choirs. This is Irish dancing without artifice.

Authentic dance:

“The type of traditional dance you will see at Siamsa is freer and less spectacular, but more intimate,” explains Jonathan Kelliher, dance teacher and artistic director of Siamsa.

«Many of our viewers comment that our performances seem more “authentic” than those of other dance shows they have seen, but obviously both styles are valid. In this video , you will see how John Fitzgerald goes from the less flashy Munnix style to the more spectacular contemporary style.

A fluid style:

While contemporary Irish dancers keep the trunk rigid, the Munnix style is much more fluid in the body and the trunk is part of the step. Few understand the history of this style as well as Jonathan.

When their feet touch the ground, they are guided by a sense of tradition: «There is a connection with the past, since my steps are of a very old “munnix style”. "This style is typical of North Kerry and indeed Siamsa Tire, so it's always nice to feel like you're keeping their tradition and memory alive."

Local tradition in action:

During the day, Siamsa's Cultural Connections offers guided tours and workshops with the cast of the National Folk Theater Company; while at night, the Siamsa Folk Festival offers dynamic and moving performances of traditional Irish music, singing and dancing. Siamsa Tíre has also started sharing her unique dance style in on-demand workshops , so you can rock out whenever you feel like it.

It is not only in the southwest of Ireland that the tradition is kept alive.

The Scottish spirit of the island:

Thanks to the large number of Scots who emigrated to Ulster in the 17th century and its rich heritage, the spirit of Scotland lives on along the entire north coast of Ireland. Especially when it comes to dancing, according to the Ulster Scots Agency , a great resource if you want to learn about the culture, music and heritage of the Ulster Scots.

Highland dancing, an athletic form of dance that requires a lot of stamina and arm strength, has its origins in the warriors of the Scottish Highlands, who performed it before going into battle. It has always been popular in Northern Ireland and is now danced mainly by women.

Scottish country dancing also has a following in Ulster. Reel and jig beats have a fast tempo, fast movements and a lively feel. Strathspey is a quieter third dance form with a slower tempo.

The three Aran Islands are fascinating historically and culturally because they are such remote islands in the past few hundred years and have developed a very rich civilization or lifestyle that is particular to themselves. The Aran Islands are known for their unique culture and language, as well as their breathtaking landscape. It was outlawed in the 12th century due to its aggressiveness, but it made a comeback in the 19th century, especially among the upper classes. In 1884, the current rules were established and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was founded.

In Ireland, the traditional autumn harvest festival is known as Lughnasadh (pronounced Loo-nah-sah). Celebrated on August 1st, it marks the beginning of the harvest season and is one of the four major Gaelic seasonal festivals, alongside Samhain, Imbolc, and Beltane. Lughnasadh is named after the Celtic god Lugh, associated with the sun and light, and is a time for feasting, athletic competitions, music, and dance.

In contemporary times, while Lughnasadh itself might not be widely observed in the traditional sense, the spirit of the harvest festival lives on in various forms. Communities hold harvest fairs, agricultural shows, and cultural events that celebrate local produce, farming, and rural life. These events often feature traditional music, dancing, crafts, and food, providing a vibrant way to mark the season.

In Ireland, an important festival in early November is Samhain. This ancient Celtic holiday marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter and is traditionally celebrated from October 31 to November 1. Samhain is considered one of the four major seasonal Gaelic festivals, along with Imbolc, Beltane and Lughnasadh. It is believed that during Samhain, the border between the physical world and the spiritual world is thinner, allowing spirits to pass through. Many Halloween traditions have their roots in Samhain customs, such as lighting bonfires and wearing costumes to ward off harmful spirits.

One of the best known pubs in Dublin for traditional Irish music. We are in on of the oldest parts of Dublin city and one of the most enduring legends surrounding Dublin has to be that of the woman – Darkey Kelly.
For generations Darkey Kelly was known in Dublin’s folk memory as the woman who was burned at the stake for witchcraft but new evidence uncovered suggests that although she was innocent of witchcraft she still had a dark side to her character. The discovery of bodies under the floorboards of the brothel she ran in 1761 suggests she may have been Ireland’s first serial killer!
Fishamble Street is one of the oldest streets in the city also. Handel’s Messiah was first performed here in 1742 and every year on the 13th of April the Messiah is performed free of charge to a public audience.
The street here was known as the official fish market for Dublin until the end of the 17th century when the city markets were moved to the north bank of the River Liffey. From 1680, the General Post Office was located here and remained for 30 years. We are passionate here in Darkey Kelly’s about Irish music and culture, with live performances every day of the week. All of our musicians are from the local area and they represent a tradition which has been passed on from generation to generation. We hope you enjoy your visit to Darkey Kelly’s and if you want to know any further details about the local area just ask one of our staff.

It stands proudly on a rocky island on the south river.

The castle was built in the thirteenth century and served as the stronghold of the powerful Butler family. So effective was its design that it was believed to be impregnable, but it finally fell to the earl of Essex in 1599 when heavy artillery was used against it for the first time. During the Irish Confederate Wars it was besieged twice more.

At the time of building, Cahir Castle was at the cutting edge of defensive castle design and much of the original structure remains.

Cahir Castle is a castle located in County Tipperary, Ireland; It is one of the largest castles in that country, as well as one of the best preserved. It was built in 1142 by Conor O'Brien, prince of Thomond, on an island located in the River Suir, on the top of a crag.

Is a city public park in Galway, Ireland. The origin of the square comes from medieval open space in front of a town gate, known as the Green. Markets mostly took place in the northern part of the space.

The earliest endeavour to formally enclose it was recorded in 1631. Some ash-trees were planted and the park was enclosed by a wooden fence. In the 1960s, a full-scale reconstruction started and iron railings were removed and raised around the backyard of St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church.

In 1965, the square was officially renamed "John F. Kennedy Memorial Park" in honour of U.S. President John F. Kennedy; despite the renaming, the square is still widely known as Eyre Square.

Hurling is a stick and ball game played by teams of 15 people on a rectangular grass field with H-shaped goals at each end. The main objective is to score by driving the ball through the goals or passing the ball over the crossbar and thus score a point. Three points equal one goal. The team with the highest score at the end of the match wins. It is over 3,000 years old and is said to be the fastest field game in the world, combining skills from lacrosse, field hockey and baseball into a hard-hitting, highly skilled game.

The 2024 All-Ireland Hurling Final will take place in Croke Park on 21 July 2024, at 3:30pm Irish time. The All-Ireland football final will take place a week later on July 28 in Croke Park at the same time.

Today, hurling is one of the most practiced sports on the island.

Rounders is the least popular of the Gaelic games.

Rounders is a bat and ball game played between two teams on a field and involves hitting a small, hard ball with a bat to round the bases and score points. As well as being very popular in schools, there are dozens of club teams across the island of Ireland that take part in various championships each year.

Rounders was born hundreds of years ago in Ireland and England, and is generally considered to have been brought to America by early settlers before being transformed into baseball. It is another example of the historical ties that unite Ireland with the United States. Rounders is organized by a subdivision of the GAA known as the Rounders Council of Ireland.

Rounders is primarily played at school and community level in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and does not have a professional league or significant media coverage to identify famous athletes in a similar way to other larger sports.

In 1884, a group of Irish people led by Michael Cusack met in Thurles, County Tipperary, with the aim of preserving and cultivating Ireland's national pastimes. Thus the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was formed. Today the organization promotes the traditional Irish sports of Gaelic football, hurling, camogie, handball and rounders, and has over 500,000 members worldwide

The GAA is located at Croke Park in Dublin. With a capacity 82,300 spectators, it is the largest sports stadium in Ireland. If you're visiting during the summer months, it's the perfect place to catch an All-Ireland football or hurling match. Its stars, true heroes in their counties, do not receive any financial amount for their services. In fact, some of the players that play in the highest level had to go to their jobs the following Tuesday as mechanics, teachers, postmen or plumbers. And they will never play for another county. There are no transfers.
