he obtained a Law degree and then promptly returned to the military to led African American soldiers when he was given the derogatory nick name" Black Jack" while serving in the American 10th Cavalry

He was given the task of inflating the forces by 130,000 men to nearly 3 million expertly trained soldiers a task which he accomplished in 18 months.

Fought on Kettle and San Juan Hills in Cuba, and was cited for gallantry. In 1919, he was awarded the Silver Citation Star for these actions.

-In 1919 promoted to General of the Armies (six star) by Woodrow Wilson which was previously held by George Washington

-Prevented American Troops from serving as replacements for depleted French and British military

He was in no danger of being recalled for that campaign - no one could have replaced him.
