At the beginning of the book the main character, Philip, starts on an island with his mom and dad. In the text it says that his mother and father had a fight about whether they would take him to a safe place over sea or stay because it wasn't safe on sea or on the island. The mom won the fight and took him on a ship to get away, but the dad stayed on the island. In the book the father says, "There's no place nice and safe right now" (Taylor 9).

A lot of the book takes place on a raft. After the ship got destroyed, Philip and an old man, Timothy, got on a raft and drifted off to sea.

the end of the book takes place on a cay.
