o I will do a few examples on the board and have the children raise their hand and participate to help me finish the problem so they get the hang of it. I will relate it back to real life again. "If we have one cookie, and Sam, Nate, Santiago and Lily all want a piece, how would we split it evenly?" Then, I will complete the example explaining step by step how we go about completing the problem.

o After we go over a few problems, I will ask for volunteers to read aloud their answers to the anticipatory set questions and I will have the answers on the board for them to talk about with a partner.

o Can we use partitioning in cooking?

o Can we use partitioning with money?

o I will then give out a worksheet with a few shapes on them, as a pre-assessment. I will read aloud the directions for all the students, but this way, Nate will be able to understand the assignment. We will work on the first one together so the students will be able to see what to do. I will make sure to walk around to the kids and tell them when they are doing a good job. "Sam, you are doing a great job staying focused on your work!" Then I will let them finish the worksheet and we will go over it together to see what parts the students need the most help with. After we go over their worksheet, I will give them a smaller one with different questions. "Now that you worked with partitioning shapes together, here are some that you can try on your own!”

o I will let them use their note sheet and the board that has the definitions while they are doing their work so they can see what a half looks like, or what a quarter looks like and they can use that knowledge to figure out the answers to the questions.

They can choose any of the materials that we have provided for them in order to make this lesson more interactive. They can even choose more than one if they would like. After the students have gathered their chosen materials, they will be told to work on this worksheet individually. I will tell them they have about 10 minutes, and then we will regroup and share that answers we have come up with. They can choose their favorite one to share. As the students are working, I will walk around in case any student has any questions and I can ask each student how they are doing.

After the students hand in their independent work, I will look through all the worksheets and see if the students were able to use their problem-solving ability to correctly answer the problems given on the worksheet. I can also see how well they are doing by walking around and monitoring the students while they are completing these activities. I will also make anonymous evaluations that ask things like:

o Were you comfortable answering the questions on the worksheet?

o What was hard for you to do on your own?

o Did the note sheet help you answer your questions and understand the lesson?
