Choose at least one of the following social issues that were present in this reading chunk. Discuss how this social force was present in a characters life. (Your response should be at least 5-6 sentences).

Social Class

Race/Ethnicity

Religion

Education

Culture

Health

Political Landscape

Health seems to be a factor in the main character's life because as a toddler she had a severe burn while trying to cook hot dogs by herself. This shows how very little the parents are and how little you care about Jeanette's health. The character's parents when she was in the hospital believed she was fine and thought that it was no big deal. The social issue of the political landscape also affects them in part of the story because of the environment that the characters are being raised in. The Political landscape that Jeannette is being raised in is not perfect because her father not being able to hold onto a job and her mother who seems immature a time does not seem like the best home to be raised in.

How might readers in different time periods or of different ages interpret the text? Readers who are older will see that the characters story is sad and miserable with more just piling on to it. Children will see the book not for what truly is because they cannot yet comprehend what is actually happening in the reading.

Does the text hold the same opinion or perspective of the world as you have? What is there you consider wrong and why? (Use examples, quotes to raise an argument or to discuss your opinion). I believe that most of the audience will agree with me that Jeannette's life so far isn't really all that great from being Launched from a moving to being sexually assaulted "“I lived in a world that at any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes.” (Jeanette walls Pg34) This shows how uncomfortable even at home the main character was going through.

How do your values alter your perceptions of the text? The way my values alter the perceptions of the text is seeing the way Jeanette gets treated and the way she is abused does not sit right with me how all these bad things she has to go through and she sees no justice to any of it her parents either arent aware or do not think it is important enough to make a fuss about it.

The characters are bouncing around from home to home From going from Grandma Erma's house to purchasing a broken home with a broken roof and a house with no plumbing and the only source of water supply is right next to a toilet. The characters are aware they are struggling financially and that their parents aren't well off for example moving around from home to home and never really had a steady home.

In the novel (Walls 2005) The Main character's grandmother is scolding her and rambling off about her thought on African American people she uses multiple racial slurs when the main character (Jeannette walls) Tells her to not say racial slurs and that is when the Grandmother (Erma) say "you ungrateful Little shut I'll be damned if you're eating my food tonight. Get your worthless ass to the basement" is what the Grandmother told Jeannette. This quote stood out to me because it shows how cruel the characters are towards children for trying to do the right thing.

Social Class was the social issue for this part of the novel Because of her social class she was picked on and bullied by her peers. The way that social class affected the character by moving from home to home and never really having a steady home. Social class plays a huge role in the character's life because it revolves around money and trying to get wealthy. Education seems to be a social issue because the characters don't seem to have much of an education which is most likely the reason they do not make the most logical decisions. In the reading the Jeanette is made fun of for being poor and her jacket not having any buttons from a jacket that was second hand but that is out of Jeannette control her social class.

"She'd also inherited some money, so she could give up teaching and buy
all the art supplies she wanted.
She'd been thinking we should move to Phoenix ever since Grandma
died a few months back, but Dad had refused to leave Battle Mountain
because he was so close to a breakthrough in his cyanide-leaching process." (Jeanette Page 93) This quote stood out to me because it shows how the family has an opportunity to better themselves but choose not to because of other foolish gimmicks that her father thinks are going to work.

Social Class seems to be one of the biggest social Issues In this reading with The character barely being able to afford 2-3 pairs of clothes and sometimes going to be hungry. Jeannette was made fun of for her social class by her peers. Jeannette was always taught to be grateful even in those dark moments when her family struggles to make ends meat. The social issue that our characters also suffer with is education I say this because Jeannette parents care very little about her education instead they believe that survival skills are needed more than school. Education plays a huge role in this story because it affects her because she never stays in the same school always changing in and out of schools and her parents not thinking her education is important.

The behavior that Jeanette has been displaying so far shows how she is tired of it all and just fed up with her father because she knows he is never going to change and provide as a father is supposed too. The character does not seem to blame anyone else but her parents for being the way that they are most of anger or the person she blames the most is her father because hes an alcoholic that doesn't seem to care for her safety or her well being.

Most people that share their stories do it give their audience a background story of where they came from and how they overcame obstacles along the way. One of the main reasons that authors share stories is to give themselves and their readers a bit of closure for the readers who are going through something similar, It shows them how they overcame it and how they had to make tough decisions for themselves in order to better themselves, for the author they get closure by finally sharing their story hoping that the reader can relate and take their message as a lesson so they do not make the same mistakes that the author did. The reason that authors share their stories is because they want to connect with readers.
