A good teacher not only improves a child's test scores in the classroom, but also enhances his or her chances to attend college, earn more money and avoid teen pregnancy, according to a new seminal study. Each of us can look back on our days in school and remember the best teacher we had as well as the worst. Whether good or bad, as teachers, we leave a lasting impression. When I was in 10th grade, I struggled with understanding math. I had always loved it when I was younger but when I got into Algebra I hit a wall. Luckily, I had an amazing teacher. He never got impatient with me or others. He had a talent for explaining difficult concepts. But the thing I remember most is his enthusiasm for math. He loved it! Everyone felt his excitement. It made the atmosphere in the classroom fun and I wanted to be in there. I am so grateful for a teacher that showed his love for what he taught.

When I reflect on all of my schooling, there are certainly teachers who stand out to me more than others. I asked myself why those teachers were memorable to me. It wasn’t always because they were fun or because they taught my favorite subject. The teachers who have made lasting impressions on me almost all have these two qualities: they are genuinely passionate about what they are teaching, and their primary goal is that their students understand the material and learn from it long term. A perfect example of this for me is Mr. Eggleston, my math teacher. To preface this I want to express how much I completely and utterly loathe math. It has caused me so much stress, grief, and discontent that even the idea of walking into one of my high school math classes again makes me sick to my stomach. Not to say that I looked forward to Mr. Eggleston’s math class every 4th period or even to say that it was tolerable. However when I thought about teachers who left a lasting impression on me, he is one of the first to come to mind. Mr. Eggleston didn’t have particularly captivating lectures nor did he favor me as a student but he loved math. The quadratic formula was music for his ears. He literally had a childlike sparkle in his eyes when he was engaged in a difficult problem. Now I can’t relate even slightly to that situation, but seeing him have so much energy about a student participate in his discussion to formulate an answer together made me excited. In the moment I’m not even sure I realized how much this helped me because I NEEDED this kind of teacher desperately. In addition, he was adamant that every other student and I truly understood what we were learning, not just pulling decent grades. In hindsight, Mr. Eggleston was probably the reason I didn’t flunk out of every high school math class and I am forever grateful for that.

There are other teachers who have truly made a lasting impact on my life. They are the Mrs. Flemming’s, Mr. Crawford’s, and Ms. McAurther’s of the world. Teacher’s who have shown me kindness and given comfort to me in times when I needed it most. These teachers were understanding, helpful, and caring. I’m lucky enough to say that I loved high school. I can owe a big part of that statement to these teachers who not only motivated me but were my friends. I think as a teacher it is crucial to be a good person. Simple as that but clearly not easy as I’ve only had a handful of these people in my life.

I think it would be absolutely impossible to exhibit all of these qualities and not leave a long-lasting, positive impact on each and every student in your classroom.

My high school English teacher Gaylen Masters, impacted my life greatly. As a student you knew he was interested in your well-being. He wasn't just an English teacher, he was a counselor to guide us through personal difficulties and help us transition into Independent living.
Friday's or every other Friday, he taught us how to apply literature or incorporate the lesson learned into real life. We watched films, listened to songs off albums, ... be taught a lesson from a former student using their talents such as art work to tell a story.
He had the ability to get us students thinking, to think out of the box. We had fun. We enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor and fun humor of fellow class mates. We learned to have empathy for others and what it was like to step out of our youthful-selfish zone and truly be interested and concerned for another student.
He is one of the most unique and genuine teachers that I have deeply admired. Many years have past since those years as a student and I can remember those class days with genuine fondness.

When I think back to teachers that really made a lasting impression on me, I instantly think back to my high school choir teacher. Not only was she a super upbeat and kind person, she was an excellent educator and was always willing to help out her students. She was also the best person to talk to. If students had issues that they couldn't really talk to other people about, she was always willing to listen. Plus, she worked with each student to make sure that they were understanding new material, and that no one was left behind in her classes. She worked so hard to make sure that everyone felt included, and that everyone had fun in her class. While at the same time, giving us goals to work for, and at the same time, helping us know how to reach them.

Teachers that have made a lasting impression in my life have been the ones who I can tell are passionate about what they teach. Even when I don't love the subject, I am inspired to learn more when I can tell that the teacher absolutely lives for what they are teaching, and when I do enjoy the subject their enthusiasm makes it that much better. The teachers that stay after class to answer questions or clear up confusion are teachers that go above and beyond what is expected of them and that makes a lasting impression on all students because it lets them know that the teacher genuinely cares about the education of their students. That kind of commitment is a very memorable characteristic.
