North and South Korea both suffered from the massive destruction caused during the Korean War. Historian Charles K. Armstrong stated that "North Korea had been virtually destroyed as an industrial society".[27]

- In the years immediately after the war, North Korea mobilized its labor force and natural resources in an effort to achieve rapid economic development.

- Large amounts of aid from other communist countries, notably the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China,[27] helped the country achieve a high growth-rate in the immediate postwar period.[28][29]

Juche: “On establishing self-reliance and eradicating dogmatism and formalism in ideology projects”.

Juche places heavy emphasis on sovereignty, self-defense, Korean nationalism, and the basic tenets of Marxism-Leninism.

Almost all property belongs to the state. Government control extends even to chattel property (domestically produced goods and all imports and exports). A functioning, modern, and independent judiciary does not exist.

As promised by the dictator, North Korea’s state-run economy grew rapidly in the 1950s and ’60s but eventually stagnated. In the 1970s, North Korean mining production had reached its peak. Sudden rises in the price of foreign oil combined with falling prices for North Korea’s native minerals hit the economy hard. Surrounding nations began building up economies based on computers and other technology, a shift that North Korea — so focused on mining and military might — was unable to keep up with. With all this, Kim made the tough decision to take on foreign debt from the USSR and China to keep the economy afloat.

During World War II, Kim led a Korean contingent as a major in the Soviet army. After the Japanese surrender in 1945, Korea was effectively divided between a Soviet-occupied northern half and a U.S.-supported southern half. At this time Kim returned with other Soviet-trained Koreans to establish a communist provisional government under the soviets in what would become North Korea. He became the first premier of the newly formed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in 1948, and in 1949 he became chairman of the Korean Workers’ (communist) Party.

The history of North Korea began with the partition of Korea at the end of World War II in 1945.

- The surrender of Japan led to the division of Korea into two occupation zones, with the United States administering the southern half of the peninsula and the Soviet Union administering the area north of the 38th parallel.

- This led in 1948 to the establishment of two separate governments – the Communist-aligned Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the West-aligned Republic of Korea – each claiming to be the legitimate government of all of Korea.

- Political problems emerge. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, relations between North and South Korea, as well as between North Korea and the rest of the world were a intense roller coaster. Conflicts kept on emerging near the demilitarized zone, while international tensions mounted too as North Korea announced its growing nuclear program.

Kim Ill Sung is a great example of what is written on On Tyranny’s chapter 19, which is on being a patriot. The chapter lists many points of what is patriotism and what is not, and many of these points can be connected to Kim Ill sung. For example, it is written, “It is not patriotic to admire foreign dictators. Kim ill sung did admire Marxism–Leninism which came from the USSR, however, he did not follow these dictators and stop. He decided to take these ideas and return back to korea with a goal of making his country better. His patriotism can be seen especially with the Juche idealism of being strictly isolated from other countries and self sufficient. Another great example of Kim Ill Sung being a patriotic is written on page 114. It writes “A patriot wants the nation to live up to it’s ideals, which is asking us to be the best of ourselves.” Regardless of how good or bad his ideals are, Kim Ill Sung did set up his ideals and goals and has managed to successfully make the North Korean nation live up to it, not only during his time of rule, but also till this day.
