Example: I realized how much mentoring is about guiding through experience rather than just giving answers. The connection between The Navigator and experience-based learning really stood out to me—I need to be more intentional about helping my mentees connect new challenges to what they already know

It can be easy to stay in one area of the mentor's compass...the area we feel most connected to...by looking at the principles of adult learning, I can see that all four areas of the mentor's compass are needed to address all of the principles of adult learning.

This was a good reflection and conversation. It gave me a chance to think about how I will balance the various principles. It's important to ebb and flow through them and not get to stuck on one!

To be an authentic encourager, you need to ensure a safe place between yourself and the mentee. If you want to grow together, then the relationship must be trustworthy. Otherwise, encouraging feedback and actions hold less value.

While we may naturally lean into one compass direction, we need to be able to shift into all four as needed by the principal.

The idea that adult learning needs to be self directed, helps me focus the navigator and strategist roles. I may think it's time to talk about ___ but they need to talk about what is not working for them.

The Strategist and Adults are self-directed learners.

We can support principals by providing them with guiding questions to help them learn through their experiences. Without that reflective pause, they may not realize what they have gained from an experience.

Something that stood out to me was always remembering to be cognizant of the principal as an adult learner. We sometimes think the role of a mentor is merely supportive, where actually it is a learning opportunity for myself and the principal.

It is not so much as how I would handle a situation but how the mentee wants to handle the situation and to help them with that decision.

Most of my important conversations as a mentor have been helping the new principal solve various problems. The strategist point is the most valuable to me as I see the other points as support toward a strategy. I get that all are used but I use strategist the most.
