Procedure:

1. Begin by showing the preschoolers a picture of a rainbow with its various colors. Explain that rainbows are made up of different colors.

2. Pour a small amount of whole milk into the shallow dish or plate to create a thin layer covering the bottom.

3. Place a few drops of different food coloring in the milk. Use the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) for this activity.

4. Explain to the children that the milk represents the clouds in the sky, and the food coloring represents the raindrops.

5. Dip a cotton swab into liquid dish soap.

6. Touch the soapy cotton swab to the center of the milk. The children will observe the colors begin to move and mix in beautiful patterns.

7. As you touch the dish soap to the milk, explain to the children that this represents how raindrops mix the colors in the sky to create a rainbow.

8. Encourage the children to watch the colors swirling and mixing, forming a rainbow-like pattern in the milk.

1. In this activity draw circles on a chalk board, white board or piece of paper. Write a number next to each circle. Have the child place the different counting blocks inside to match the number.
