Let's critique Louis Theroux’s interview style from the perspective of conducting a research interview. What works well? What could be done differently?

Early on in the interview, the interviewer heavily complimented the interviewee - focusing on building up their ego early on. Example: "I love his voice. I love his unapologetic sort of lover man style of performing. And he's [...] suave...."

This felt like an odd approach for a psychological qualitative interview, though applicable to this specific form of interviewing. The goal of a podcast like this is to not only interview, but also to provide entertainment to their audience. This approach feels like it could be helpful in a psychological qualitative interview when trying to disarm someone who needs their ego built up (e.g. narcissist).

His prepared questions were clear, but as the interview went on, he seemed to start to make assumptions. Example: instead of saying "it seems you felt ____, is that correct?", he would say "so you felt ____". It is quite leading and forcing a feeling onto the interviewee rather than allowing them space to name their own feelings.

While Louis probed somewhat throughout the interview, there were some points where he missed the opportunity to do so. For instance, Craig was discussing his experience with racism, and while this would have been a good place to probe into his experience as a person of color (ie. gaining a holistic view of his experience), Louis did not. This could be a result of him wanting to stick too much to his script or his positionality as someone without experience with racism.
